Got a call from Toyota on Friday, asking if I'd like to book my nearly 6 year old, 5k mile GR in for a major service and MOT. Seems the service is now £602, so I asked if that included changing all the transmission fluids. The answer was they are checked, and topped up if necessary. Apparently 2 or 3 years ago this service was around £350, so that's some big inflation. I wonder what would happen if I say I want the fluids, if it doesn't need topping up. As I don't fancy hanging around in the dealership for 3-4 hours, I asked about a courtesy car, that will be another £40. If it wasn't for extending the warranty, and having to use Toyota to get it, I don't think they would see the car again.

Not the cheapest car to do next to no miles in.

Having seen really very bad service issues by Toyota dealers, I have serviced my own GRY from 2,500 miles on. I'm quite handy with spanners (working on classic Aston's and stuff) and I know for an absolute fact it's done with more care than any 'filter spinner' who's on a bonus at the dealer!! It's also a damn sight cheaper!

An example of a bad service, a Toyota dealer gave the customer their GRY back with brake pads fitted back-to-front !!! Yep, the steel back of the pad on the disc surface!

Similar on the GR86, £5xx for the year 4 service IIRC. Same as you, if it wasn't for the extended warranty it would be an independent.

With the price of fuel too at present I keep thinking maybe a Tesla getmecoat is a decent shout with no annual services.

You could make an assessment and decide that Toyotas are reliable, so you could get the car serviced elsewhere and manage without the warranty.

I've had the car for 10 months, and done half of the mileage on it. It's a fair weather car, so at least I'm not getting getting hammered while doing the every day shopping/commuting miles I suppose.

You are not immune with the GR. My 18k mile 2020 V60 was due the 12 month service having been last serviced at 15k (and every year previously) and needed a £700 service apparently.
Having been a mechanic for 30 years I did do it myself using genuine parts as the Volvo warranty I have is out in a few months anyway. I might kick myself if I have a problem now but £700 is mental money for a fluid change.

Aside from 3 or 4 cars I've owned that had a factory warranty, I've worked on my own cars for decades too. AFAIK you could get a Toyota serviced at any reputable independent garage during the initial 5/3 year factory warranty due to the block exemption rule. But not under the Toyota extended warranty. Toyota do extend their warranty for a further 12 months with their service, but they also do that with a minor service that costs a lot less.

Are margins so tight now that workshops alone are propping up glass palace empires.

If we had a pure petrol car destined as long term ownership i'd be inclined to self over-service once normal warranty expires and risk it, unfortunately having a Prius 5 PHEV the choice won't be quite so simple when the standard car warranty ends on ours.

That's been the case for a VERY long time.

New car sales are a loss leader, used and servicing is where the profit is at.

I took our 2011 Volvo XC90 in for a Polestar remap about 2 years ago, thought while I was there I'd ask how much the "major" service was that it was due, was quoted something like £580.

Service kit from another Volvo dealer came to about £120 including the oil and it took an hour of my time. Admittedly that was on a car well outside of warranty.

I am glad I subscribed to the service pack for 10 years with of services when I bought the car. The prices of the services have jumped a lot. Although the price of motor oil has increased a lot in the past couple of years too.

That's fine if you keep the car for the 10 years. it would be a selling point if you sell, but perhaps you wouldn't get what the remining services had cost back. And I've read service plan work isn't popular with some dealers... I bought a 2 year service/warranty plan from SEAT a couple of years ago, when I had my Cupra R ABT. It was around £600...

Toyota servicing has increased massively compared to other makes, annual oil changes or 10k miles whichever comes first and 0W8 oil @ some £100 a 5 litre bottle (no doubt more when sold by the workshop unit measure, assuming they use the correct oil) are probably the main factors.
Back around 2009 you could buy a 5 litre bottle of 5w30 over the Toyota dealer parts counter for £15.

The Gen 2 GR Yaris had a hefty new price increase too.

The prices look bad when you aren't doing the miles. Something like £300 for a minor and £550 for a major.

Looking at it on a monthly cost basis helps and a service plan means less than a low level Sky subscription every month.

With the miles I do, I know the car doesn't need the fluid and filter changes. I just accept it's the price I pay for the 10 year warranty and resale value. I would pay it for an ordinary car but then I wouldn't be doing such low mileage in an ordinary car.

I haven't had any issues with Toyota service quality.

The services are more than that now, and I chucked in Sky years ago. Though price up a new engine or transmission from Toyota, and I wonder how many owners or potential buyers would pass on the warranty.

£395 and £590 for intermediate and major. I was a bit out. Book now if it it matters. Prices are increasing again in January.

Mines due a 5 year service in Jan and prompted by this went on the app and seen the minor is now £395 for what really looks like oil/filter and cabin filter and a wipe over with an oily rag... What value to put on the 1 year warranty extension? However, not sure this would be much use to me now after some fettling at Whifbitz.
