Toyota CHR speed sign recognition weird fault
Discussion
Hi folks, my friend has a Toyota CHR which has a fault with the road sign assist (RSA) warning feature (speed limit sign recognition). The car was bought new and is approx 3 years old fully serviced at Toyota.
In normal operation the road sign assist warning can be activated and will present a graphic of a road speed limit sign with white background displaying the prevailing speed limit by a camera reading the road speed sign. If speed is then exceeded the graphic turns red and can also be configured to emit an audible warning. A feature is also included to configure an offset mph margin (plus or minus) from the limit. e.g. 30mph +3mph offset = warn/alarm at 33mph. This offset is not part of This fault.
This intermittent anomaly has just manifested itself as follows:-
When travelling at say 50mph the RSA suddenly reports exceeding the set speed limit of 50 because it suddenly sees the limit as 50 KPH! Graphic turns red until speed reduces below MPH equivalent of 50 KPH! When it turns white again.
Seems to be totally random and means the feature is not useable and irritating when it is active.
My friend reported that this fault may have started after the RSA read incorrectly a reduced speed limit in roadworks. The 60 sign had an unusually curly top tail and was read as 80! We obviously don't have a 80 MPH in the UK and could it be that the RSA has then construed the car is on the continent and invoked a KPH map in its brain instead?
The car continues to observe speed limits leaping between MPH and KPH randomly.
Anyone had any experience of this fault as the Toyota dealer hasn't a clue although they acknowledge this is a fault.
Any help would be much appreciated. Cheers.

Thanks for that Bill
Friends car has had another visit to the local Toyota garage and they have reloaded the ECU and it seems to have cured this fault.
As I explained above, seems to have started misreading a 60 sign as an 80 possibly fooling it into continental map and associated warnings.
Will only be totally sure when and if the car "sees" another 80 sign again and doesnt misbehave again. My friend is convinced it was first triggered by an odd forming of the number 6 on a 60 limit. I did suggest could it have been reading an 80 sign on the rear of a foreign truck but no she is convinced it was the roadside posted limit of 60.
I did Check out some Toyota forums and found similar issues on different models but no solutions.
Anyway, thanks for taking the trouble to reply. Cheers.
