They have their compromises but when you consider the Mk3 provides a very high percentage of the experience of an Elise at a fraction of the cost, they make a lot of sense - imo.
Increase the percentage. Remove the 1ZZ, replace with a 2ZZ, and you'll still have plenty left in your wallet.

What a proposition it would have been if Toyota had fit the 2ZZ as a "Sport" model.
Horse for courses. 2ZZ fun on the track. 1ZZ more fun and usable on the road. Lower down is better and keeping the engine in the boiler the whole time on the road gets old fast!
Odd, in my experience the 2ZZ was the same on the road as the 1ZZ, it's just that from 6K RPM+ the fun starts building in earnest, whereas with the 1ZZ you have to reach for another gear. I found the revvy nature of the 2ZZ suited the 'MRS' owing to the lightweight, and that type of car suiting a low-torque high-revving N/A engine. I couldn't see a reason why I wouldn't have done the swap (cost/time aside), though must admit even a 1ZZ would be preferrable to sticking a bloody 1.8T 20V VAG engine in one.... woeful, droning, tappety, crap engines - all well and good if you want to go fast in a straight line I suppose.
