Couldn't see this anywhere else and not sure how accurate but apparently the Tesla 2 is being cancelled.

A 'robotaxi' is a million miles from a smaller cheaper Tesla. For one thing it'll need to fufil a host of safety requirements to meet legislative hurdles that haven't even been established yet. As I understand it, we're talking about the same thing. The new small Tesla will be the robo taxi. Existing Tesla vehicles can already drive fully autonomously - watch the videos on TwiX of them doing so now that FSD is out of Beta. Global rules don't allow it but the US rules do.Tesla have two breakthrough propositions - the physical construction of the vehicle, and the AI. Tesla make a gross profit on cars in a way that so few other manufacturers (legacy or new) do. Having so few parts is a drastic cost saver, and Cybertruck brings new advances - steer by wire removes more parts and makes changes simpler, and 48v architecture removes lots of wires. The new small car drives all of those things forward. And the AI? They have taught the AI to drive like a human. Nobody else has that.
In Europe, Japan, Australasia we won't get the robo taxi functionality but Tesla will definitely sell the car. Why wouldn't they? Unlike so many other car producers they make more money the more cars they sell.

Oh, well, let me think. Maybe it's because profitability gets a lot harder the smaller the cars are? Tesla is used to achieving a certain margin per car and they may have found out that building smaller cars, even a huge number of them, won't be as comfortably profitable as the bigger ones.JustGetATesla said:

Other car makers make smaller cars, which Tesla doesn't do at the moment. If the news is to be believed, it seems Tesla doesn't even want to try it. They like their margin too much.JustGetATesla said:

The physical construction of the vehicle means they can’t be repaired easily and are becoming uninsurable as a result. Bye bye sales.As for the “AI” you’re taking the piss, aren’t you? Their systems are no more advanced than anything any other manufacturer has - they just spin it to make it seem all smart and hi tech. Merc, Cadillac, Honda and others all have proven systems at or above the level of Tesla.
The smartest thing Elon has said about Tesla is that its worth virtually nothing without FSD.
The car business looks in really poor health right now, so its FSD or nothing, just as the CEO predicted. Cybertruck has been shelved, the M2, shelved, the roadster and the semi truck - crickets...

Tesla do seem to struggle with volume sales other than the MY and it’s arguably the oldest car they have if you ignore a lot of the MS, MX and M3 are carried over or lightly tweaked. I’m guessing the challenge they have is making a low cost car without all the cameras and autopilot stuff to save money and still have passive safety system which rely on the former and make it cheaply, and be something people still want to buy. It’s not like there’s a lot you can take out of a model 3 to make it cheaper if you leave in the autopilot hardware.
I’d forget the roadster 2, make a decent model 3 coupe and hatchback, and a rugged model y like a model y off-road. Fairly minimal running gear changes, just new bodies from the a pillar backwards. Variations of this works for bmw, Audi and merc, but what do they know about building cars? Maybe that’s acting too much like a car company.

When you look at Tesla volumes, financial results, trajectory of those numbers, and their future roadmap, it's like looking at a company in the financial crisis of 2008. Effectively, they're in a deep recession, only they're just in it by themselves (and a few other EV brands to be fair)
