Pretty sure I am going to go for a M3 LR. *

Budget is max 27k.

2 options.

Option 1

I can get a mid/late 2020 car with about 40k on the clock from Tesla directly.
That will be under warranty for 18-22 months ish in theory (balance of factory + 1 year free extension).
They also upgrade to EAP for free so might add a tiny bit of value.
14 day guarantee.

Option 2

Used from either private or trade.
Prices look to be about 5-10% cheaper.
No extra warranty (I am very wary of used car warranty) so maybe 6-8 months warranty (ish).

I am thinking of going to Tesla directly?

Anyone done this?

'*

Then when you start thinking about it you start to look at SR+ LFP <edited> for similar money with half the mileage...

Obviously, there's a difference between the 3 and the Y. They are based on the same platform so I guess you then have to decide between having a saloon or a hatchback. The 3 does have a very useful boot space, with a big storage compartment below the boot 'floor'. The seats are also split-fold and flat which is great for getting longer items in if you need to. If it helps, with the seats down, I can get my mountain bike in relatively easily if I take the front wheel off. The Y will give you some extra load height.

Take a look at both and decide which one suits your needs best.

I would also suggest you drive an SR and LR, including an SR Model 3. You'll get RWD and more than adequate performance from an SR Model 3 so be honest with yourself, exactly how often will you need the extra acceleration of an LR? And if you can stretch your budget by a few £thousand, you might just find a 2022 Model 3 from Tesla which should have the LFP battery (allowing you to charge to 100% which will give you good range - I get an indicated 262 miles range out of mine).

Can you get into a LR Y for £27k?

Ok. Then you have to drive both the SR and LR. Don't be swayed by the 'off the line' performance. Ask yourself how often you will actually use or need that on a day-to-day basis.

I don't know how Tesla warranties work with cars that are sold privately but I'm sure other people will know. Or, check with Tesla. Your friendly Tesla Service Centre (rather than a Tesla Store) should be able to help.

I collected my 71 plate M3 LR today having worked through the options over the past couple of weeks.

I wanted a car with about 2 years warranty and I’d decided it had to be a 2021 model primarily due to the heat pump which makes them more efficient in cold weather. 2021 car deliveries started Nov/Dec 2020 and are easily distinguished by the black rather than chrome trim around the windows.

My budget started at £27k but crept up and I’ve picked up a car a couple of weeks over 2 years old - there are a few around as they knocked a batch out to lease companies which are now coming back in. I think the 2021MY cars will hold most of the additional cost in their residual value in 3 years time - that was the justification I gave to the OH anyway!

I initially thought I’d go for a Certified Pre Owned primarily for the warranty benefits but the new car warranty is 4yr/50k and cars in budget had about 35k on the clock, so I’d burn the warranty out on mileage rather than time. Might not be an issue if you do low mileage and buy a low mileage one, but I couldn’t find one at £27k with less than 35K. That got me looking at very late 2021 cars with lower mileage which have some minor improvements (dash trim runs in to the doors, heated rear seats and built in the new China factory which are said to be (marginally) better built) from other sources. I had a strong preference for a colour other than white too, which is very limiting as I’m not keen on grey either.

The Enhanced Autopilot is of minimal benefit today - the only usable feature beyond is standard is lane change assistance, Summon and Autopark don’t work on the Model 3 yet. I’d take an FSD subscription if they manage to crack that.

This gets you into a 2021MY so you have almost a years new car warranty left for £27k - http://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/2024010251...

https://www.tesla.com/en_GB/m3/order/5YJ3F7EBXLF70... looks like the best CPO option if you’ll forgive the £100 over budget.

There is almost nothing for dealers to do to these cars other than wash them, so I wouldn’t be concerned about buying a car outside of Tesla. Once it’s registered on the app you’ll get no better or worse service should you need it. Tesla is a machine - there’s no personal service. I got mine from Arnold Clark of all places and it was all very straightforward - they move a lot of lease return Teslas so they are familiar with the process.

Definitely buy one though, the acceleration is a hoot but I’m surprised how good an all round package they are in terms of space, comfort and cruising ability. They are a very pleasant thing to drive fast or slow.

Thanks I think the extra years warranty will swing it for me.
That said if I can get the equivalent car at a lower cost I will consider it.

Having now researched I think my 2 main choices are LFP RWD or China made LR.

Just need to wait and see if something comes in to stock in the next couple of weeks.

So good news and bad.

Good first.. insurance, it seems that the LR isnt any more expensive than the SR. Thats a bonus, I guess. Both coming in about £850.

The bad news, I contacted Tesla about a car on their website with a view to buying and collecting when I come back to the UK next week.... er no. Their current lead time is 6 weeks! WTF.

This apparently is even if it says "ready for delivery".

The Certified Pre Owned programme seems like something of an afterthought for Tesla. There’s relatively few cars on there and lots of them are fairly high mileage too. The logistics are unhelpful - surely they could offer delivery? The one I fancied on there - a blue LR in Cardiff - jumped £800 up in price overnight and Cardiff is a good 4hr drive for me.

I reserved mine online at Arnold Clark on Tuesday lunchtime and picked it up on Thursday morning.

From what I've seen and read, you're probably better off dealing with a reputable used car dealer than Tesla for pre-owned vehicles.

Tesla have higher prices, little information and a sketchy pre-owned PDI. The extra years warranty is useful but on the whole they are very reliable cars anyway.

Judging by how many were registered in 2021, I would count on quite a few entering the used market in 2024.

I'm sure they registered around 8k LR models in 2021 and most would be a 3 year lease.

Yea what he said, 2021 was the year they sold a lot of model 3 in the UK.

There will be 7 thousand of them hitting three years old in March, and then the same again in June.

My mate is after a 2021 LR. I predict by June/July time, you'll be able to pick up a <50k Model 3 LR for £20k.

Might be wrong, but I just don't think there's a massive number of private buyers out there.

Any known issues with steering wheels? I am starting to look more closely now I have returned from my travels and I have noticed quite a few are showing what looks like issues with the leather (faux I assume) on the wheel.

I don't know a 3 year old Model 3 LR with less than 50k miles is a very strong proposition.

It's a hell of a lot of car for the money.

There are a few on Autotrader with signs of wear even at low mileage. It's not a massive issue though, there are so many for sale just move on if the seller or dealer won't get it replaced.

Maybe it's the vinyl / fake leather they use. Could always re-trim in real leather.

Agree, but I feel there's still a lot of anti-EV rhetoric around.
My Wife has never driven more than 100 miles in one trip would still be petrified of an EV range despite is being fine for 99.9% of her trips .

The are available, not cheap the last time I checked though.
