I suppose a few moments of common sense might have prevented it - but it's never happened with other cars.

When we had some cold weather the other week, I had an inch of hard snow on the car - so I used the 'defrost' function and it put a nice crack in the windscreen.... which is being replaced on Friday.

I am not sure how best to warm the car when it's below freezing, but clearly having the heat full on is not a great idea.

I've never had that either. The heat function, I'd have thought, shouldn't cause enough of a heat shock to crack the glass, like say pouring hot water onto the glass.

There can be stresses in the glass from the drying of the glue - perhaps the gentle heat combined with those is enough?

In an EV are the heaters virtually instant? Compared to a a petrol which can take a few minutes to warm up, or a diesel which can take all morning (hehe)

Just curious...?

One would imagine that's exactly what the defrost function is for.

I'd look in to Tesla fixing this under warranty. I have read that there was a bad batch of screens and that it isn't uncommon for those to break in this way.

This is a known issue. I had seen a few videos from Canadians with the exact same issue when the Telsas first came out.

It's currently being replaced by Tesla as I type.... they say that it can't be done under warranty as there was a stone chip on the screen - a chip I couldn't see.

The crack ran along where the heating vents are...

£400 I think. Not the end of the world, but a bit annoying.

Not instant but certainly quicker.

One great advantage is that you don't need to go out to your car - just set the climate running from your phone.

Just for further balance I'll add I've been pouring hot (but not boiling) water on my icy frosty screens for years and have never had a screen crack due to that.

Insurance should cover it, surely?

Turned out to be £900.

I wanted Tesla to do it rather than Autoglass - if there's a next time, I might well use the insurance.

The screen in my XC90 is....electric.

So the same sort of wires running through similar type of glass turned on/off the same way.

Sounds like a fault to me that I wouldn't be happy having to cover.
