I was following a Tesla up the M1 this afternoon, for what ever reason the brake lights kept coming on time after time, as if the driver was tapping the brakes. For the two or three minutes I was following they must have come on 20 or 30 times. Not just downhill either but climbing and obviously on the power.

Is this a fault, a stupid driver, or some sort of regeneration system. If it’s the latter, then it’s frankly bloody stupid.

Sounds like a fault if they’re coming on during acceleration, unless the driver is wearing clown shoes or diving flippers.
On regen on most EVs the brake lights come on as the car slows much more than a coasting ICE car - it’s a safety thing.

standard for EVs when in regen mode - it's just to remind those behind in ICEs to judge traffic flow better, save fuel and prolong the life of their brakes wink

I thought it was Morse code for "please come past so I can make use of your slipstream".

Could have been clown shoes, he was closer than he should have been behind another car, but it was definitely happening going up hill as well as down.
If it switches to regen mode and puts the brake lights on as soon as anybody lifts of the throttle, then Personally I think it’s a bit dangerous, it’s a bit like crying wolf, people will just tend to ignore them. It was incessant and really annoying even in poor daylight at night it would be like following a faulty Christmas tree.

There is a specification that details at what deceleration the brake lights come on.

Doesn’t mean the sensor on the car isn’t broken.

Acting properly the regen will only activate the brake lights with sufficient retardation. So it’s not dangerous.

If the guy in front is tailgating and constantly lifting off the throttle this will happen. Needs to drive like less of a tt I'd suggest and learn how to keep a consistent distance and throttle position.

I will add that having recently changed to a different EV I'm enjoying the ability to control the amount of regen based on the type of driving I'm doing. For around town I use the paddles to set maximum regen and essentially one pedal driving but for A-Roads/Motorways turn it off completely so the car coasts. Seems to work very well so far and makes it less likely you'll see the issue mentioned by the OP.

Being a Newbie, I'd hazard a guess you encountered another Newbie as the same happens on our car.

Appears to purely require an adaptation of driving style as initially it feels like you're either accelerating or braking & that is somewhat off-putting. Just a case of learning this 'new' world of EV's/Tesla.

Yeah you can see on the little Tesla's backside on the dash display when the brake lights light up and it's only during full-on regen and even then it's not always immediate - slowing down from motorway speeds lights aren't on initially IIRC. Maybe the driver is more used to something with less power and uses the accelerator as a switch...
