Hi all,

I am looking to get a Tesla M3 through a Salary Sacrifice Scheme my employer is just about to start offering. I was pretty set on the Performance (Currently in an S3 Saloon, had Mk7 Golf GTI prior, Focus ST prior to that) - so I like having a performance orientated differentiation.

However the price has just gone up another £3k in the past week, so now leaves a £13k gap between this and the Long range.

Just looking for some feedback on whether you think its worth the extra? Is this acceleration boost available to UK owners I have seen being discussed do you know on the LR?

At £60k, I have had a look elsewhere but there isnt a lot with that performance / range blend in a prestige brand at that mark really. Polestar comes a close second.

Thanks!

They raised it again? Personally I wouldn't pay 13k for lowered suspension and larger tyres.

I'd go for the LR and see how it goes, then add the acceleration option if you feel something is missing.

I have the P3D stealth which is essentially a LR with 18" and 3.1s and it's nuts! Makes me smile every day, but I have the roads for it. Never driven a LR base without the addon, so couldn't tell you what the difference feels like.

Is testing both on the cards?

Would you class them as a Prestige Brand?

There is no doubt the turn of pace they offer is staggering but the horror stories you hear on the fit and finish, reliability and long lead times on parts and repairs doesn't ring true to a Prestige Brand.

Take a look at Tesla Bjorn's channel on YouTube. He has done some comparisons of the Performance and LR recently, and from memory concluded that the LR is better in a number of ways.

Thanks for your reply! I had a memory that the Performance was cheaper prior.... but could be thinking back a year or 2 so just aligned with inflation.

For a newbie on electric cars and Tesla's, whats the deal with the stealth? Are they available in the UK market?

Stealth kind of morphed into the LR with the acceleration add on. Think it's 1500.

Unless you will make good use of track mode, it's the better bang for buck.

Test drive is essential though I'd say.

Totally. Very reliable. Parts took about month for me after my prang.

Lifes too short for fit and finish! But I think that's improving.

Depends what you are after from the car. The LR will be more than quick enough, offers some range benefits and will ride better on smaller wheels and softer suspension.

I went with the Performance as wanted the best driving/fastest model available and preferred the looks with the bigger wheels/brakes/spoiler/lower ride height. At the time we ordered ours (July 2019) the lease cost was basically identical for the LR and P so a no brainer, but I certainly wouldn't have considered paying the best part of 30-40% premium that is currently being demanded.

Thanks. Yeh makes sense - im in touch with Tesla to see whats on offer in terms of test. Dont suppose you remember the price differential on the P11d value at the time? I'm still hopeful a bit of trickery here in my favour from the leasing company will make the step up more palatable when it comes to getting the quotes.

Yeh its a fair point - maybe its the point of difference, and the costs of the brands range that drives the perception. Im fully expecting some fit and finish challenges as are well documented!

On a side - if it wasnt a Tesla, any idea of alternatives in this range for performance and range blend? I almost wish there were alternatives but beyond the polestar 2, and maybe the mustang e?

Does it have to be brand new? They have a whole raft of unsold inventory Perormance Model 3's in stock starting at £54k. Just a thought.

For me, £13k over the long range just isn't worth it if you're buying new. It's not like the Long range is slow.

I'm surprised there is demand at 60k.

As it’s leased through salary sacrifice, it will need to be new I think. 😞

Closest competition is the polestar 2 though at around £5k cheaper (with performance upgrade), but still not on par on either performance or range. Performance orientated electric cars just seem to be really pricey still.

There is a used P on inventory, 7k miles.

Just 57,000 of your earth pounds.

Turns out they do appreciate. Or a reflection on how overpriced the other cars are? biggrin

It'll do 60 in 3 seconds and 100 in 8, seats 5 in comfort and costs buttons to run. The Audi E-Tron RS GT and Porsche Taycan Turbo have similar performance, less practicality and no supercharging network yet cost more than double what the Tesla does.

It's looks pricey nowadays when compared to the LR, but if you're cross shopping other performance EV's or ICE cars then a different story?

It's got FSD which would have been a £6k option. Definitely overpriced though for a 2019 car when a brand new 2021 update car with EAP would cost £62k

I test drove the LR and the P back to back last week, before I knew about the price rise.

I honestly didn’t notice any difference in acceleration between them but I was sold on the P because it felt firmer and the steering felt more ‘point and go’ than the LR did. I took a few days to talk myself into it but I thought in the grand scheme of things it was only a few £k more to have the one I really wanted.

My plans got blown out the water when I found out The P had gone up to £60k so I’ll try another drive in the LR and see if I can convince myself.

I got an M3P on company salary sacrifice just before Christmas. At the time I was choosing between the LR and P, for me it made a £100 difference in the net deduction, so I decided that I could comfortably afford it and I'd like to have the top of the range.

I think now, I'd struggle to justify that, and would get the LR.

Best to check with your company car provider on the ability to purchase things like the acceleration boost though. On mine, I don't have full access to the Tesla account, I've obviously been added as a driver of the car rather than the owner. So I can't purchase things through the app. I expect this is the norm with any lease other than leasing from Tesla themselves.
That’s an interesting point about the Tesla account access. Have you got the full infotainment connectivity for example? How much of a hindrance can it become in your position for usability? Phone login etc work normally?

Just thinking about the fact that it’s a $48000 car in California makes my eyes water - regardless of whether it’s made in China or the US - that’s ~£35000 at current exchange rate.

Does the RHD design mod really cost £25k?

Lots of other complexities like import costs and sales taxes to take into account. Hardly a new thing either, check the relative costs of things like mustangs and corvettes.
