New BMW M3 or Model 3 Performance?
Discussion
I was looking at leasing the current M4 earlier in the year before I saw sense and went the Model 3 Performance route. TCO over 3 years and 45k was getting on for double that of the Tesla and I imagine the new one will be even more expensive.
You'd have to be a very committed petrolhead to go for the (BMW) M3 or doing very few miles.

The only reasons to go for the BMW would be build quality and shell strength. Any objective review of TM 3 owner experiences available reveal ultra long waits for sc appointments, repeated visits to resolve single items, major issues with panels rubbing metal on metal(!) and repeated problems with lamp housings letting in water, service bulletins on resolving flexing rear floor plates and repainting required in specific areas where cars have collided with others during shipping.
But ok, apart from all that Mrs Lincoln what did you think of the play.....;)

Surely you're not positing that what you've written represents a typical Model 3 ownership experience?Zcd1 said:

cant speak for the new BMW M3
but I did have a 66 reg M3 for a year. It was a great car, personal taste but I loved the saloon with its swollen arches etc, and it had ceramics. Build quality was beyond reproach. Once above 2-3k revs it was a monster
but
the fact is the performance of my M3P- is more accessible, more of the time. it is more comfortable, cheaper to run, and has more space in the back
and I feel you can drive it and make progress far more anonymously because of its silence, whereas like any spicey ICE car when you are on it they are noisy which attracts unwanted attention
I have leased the Tesla not bought it but I think its v likely the depreciation is less savage... BMW M cars are amongst the worst. I bought it 2nd hand but had the supplying dealer invoice. List was £73k and the first owner got an £8k discount

depreciation is going to be interesting on the M3, atm because of the rarity its the first car i have purchased recently (normally RS / AMGs) that has not dumped 15k the second it left the showroom, looking that the prices of the few for sale privately i could potentially get what i paid for it maybe even a little bit over with the price risehopefully 0% bik will keep demand very high and residuals up

These are 2 key aspects/advantages of EVs in general, IMO. The instant response and near-silent operation make it both more practical and more fun to drive quickly!and I feel you can drive it and make progress far more anonymously because of its silence, whereas like any spicey ICE car when you are on it they are noisy which attracts unwanted attention...
Owned many M, AMG cars and now have a Tesla Model S75D and a Porsche 911 GTS...I am not a tree hugger at all. The Tesla is the best car I have ever owned...very reliable, every day real world performance, the car has got better over the 2yrs I have owned it (thanks to software upgrades). More importantly it has cost me £900 in a set of tyres after 30k miles...that is it...for all that performance. Running costs are very low (£15 for 300 miles range) and I think the depreciation on the Model 3 Performance would be less savage than on the new M3 (unless you want to speculate on the BMW). The Model 3 Performance by many accounts is supposed to be better than the Model S I own if you want more spirited drives and tighter handling - just go for it and you won't look back.
The big doubt I had was whether I would miss the sound of a performance engine/exhaust...yes you do...but in my case a little and if I had to own just 1 car it would my Tesla.

M3 over TM3 any day for "fun"
The M3 looks like a £60k car, in terms of quality and engineering, the TM3 looks like a £30k car at best by the same metrics, despite almost certainly being the "Better" car in the real world. But in the real world, you don't need to spend £50k on a car, either car!
(i spent £16k on my i3, second hand, it's better engineered than any Tesla (and most ICE BMWs too...) more unique, and plenty fast enough for me)
