immobiliser whats the diff. between this and alarm

SOunds like a stupid question, but what is the difference between and immobiliser and alarm. Is that just another name for the alarm? Are they the same thing?

Jeff, AFAIK, the immobiliser prevents the engine from starting and the alarm makes a lot of noise/flashing lights when a door or clamshell is opened - of course, these two features work together to provide a 'total' theft prevention package.
