You could fit a turbo timer, this keeps the engine running for a couple of minutes whilst you lock the car and walk away. Not sure on the legality of such devices as I thought it was illegal to leave a running car unattended. Used the give the scooby a couple of minutes off boost and a minute idle.

It's illegal to leave you car running with the use of a turbo timer, the main thing to consider is your alarm, if you use a turbo timer to keep the engine running without the key, you are creating a way for a thief to do the same thing

Just sit in your car, play with the stereo for a few mins and let it idle and cool and the oil to drain from the turbo's.

Damage is done when you just switch off after a hard run, the oil around the turbo is baked by the heat and the chemical bonds break down faster, these can clog up the oil lines and lead to turbo failure eventually.

Anyway turbo timers do nothing for the other hot components such as brakes etc. Much better to just calm down and drive slowly for a bit before parking up. That way there's still air moving over the car cooling things.

obes,

We've just been discussing the exact same topic on the owners club website this month.

As long as you cool it down - about 15 years...

(Well that's how long it took for me to break one on the Ur - and it glows even brighter than that after a hard run....)

What ever happened to the old style "Turbo Timer", circa 1988. The one that was a seperate electric pump that pumped oil through the turbo for a specified amount of time after the engine was shut off.

I remember seeing one on a new Saab SPG Turbo.

I had the turbo glowing on my Renault 5GT Turbo. 3 days later I was looking for a new enginge. It came from the factory on a posh wooden pallet all shrink-wrapped and looking lovely. It lasted less than 6 months. I believe that you can't mollycoddle a turbo too much. Thrash it to within an inch of it's life, yes, but cool it down properly (the longer the better)
