Just a bit of advice really... I am looking to trading in my heavily modified MG ZS 180, for a GTO 3R. What other modifications can be done to increase the top end speed of the 3r? The 3.7 0.62 will be no problem, but something a tad more than 170 would be nice... somewhere in the 180-190 possibly?? I don't know if this is possible without interupting the reliability of the engine. I am planning on taking it on the Gumball next year, so it needs to be able to do 3k miles in a few days without too much hassle!

Many thanks for any help

Duncan

Well a few people here have removed their rear spoilers to reduce the drag of the car (albeit lose some down force/looks).

This reduces the drag coefficient, but if the Noble is capable of hitting the limiter in top gear, the top speed will remain unchanged, you will just get there quicker.

FHM were loaned a Noble for the Gumball Rally (or something similar) and I don’t recall them having too many problems.

Does the Noble come with a speed limiter as standard? or are they completely derestricted?

Thanks for your help though!

Removing the rear spolier makes a negligible difference - we're talking 1 or 2mph - so what you really need is more power. The M400 will pack in excess of 400bhp, and we hope that will hit closer to 180mph (the current 3R and the M400 run out of gearing at 190mph anyway).

I'm afraid that we don't offer any tuning kits for our cars, so perhaps you should try blagging an M400. We'll launch it at the Motor Show in May.

Sorry, didn't catch your second message in time. Aerodynamics is the only thing stopping the 3R hitting a higher top speed.

Bit more than 1 - 2 mph Simon. Removing the rear wing made a 4% improvement in top speed when my 3R was at Bruntingthorpe in October. Into a very strong headwind it reached 153 winged and 159 wingless. To put the wind in perspective, there was a 911 turbo that had previously hit 192, but only managed 174 that day.

Totally agree that more power = higher top speed

Trouble is it's a "cubed" law...

www.pumaracing.co.uk/topspeed.htm

To that end to get it to around 190 you'd need around 5-600bhp ish..

On a windy day, yes, you would see a bigger difference. The key is to run in both directions to achieve a mean figure, which is what I've quoted.

Duncan, an M400 would kick some serious ass on the Gumball, and leave some very expensive kit with red faces.

I would suggest coming to the Noble owners day at Rockingham in March. I would be happy to take you round for a couple of laps.

Cheers,
Ian.

PS. Don't leave your cheque book at home

Thats a very good offer and I may just take you up on that! What *rough* price are we looking for for a M400?? Also... I like my creature comforts i.e leather trimmed, air con etc... that will be a problem in an M400 won't it?

Thanks

As Simon has mentioned earlier, all will be revealed at the Motor Show in May, including price and options.

Cheers,
Ian.

Simon,

There was talk a few months ago of a possible factory upgrade for the 3[R] - along the lines of 385BHP?

Any more news?

Cheers.

Marlon,

I'm afraid we have no current plans for any engine upgrades. We are devoting all our attention to the GTC and M400 at the moment.
