engine cutting out
Discussion
Has anybody out there suffered engine cut out either when slowing to a halt or during normal driving when engine is hot?
This has happened 4 or 5 times in last few months but more dangerously when doing 70 (really!) on the M25 in outside lane the engine just gave up and took a couple of goes to restart. It feels like fuel starvation but plenty in the tank and once restarted goes fine.
A bit disconcerting on a motorway!!

Two things spring to mind :
1) Do you have the latest engine map?
2) Strongly suggest getting your dealer to have a look at the fuel filter. And don't rev too hard until they have.
The restart tends to take a few goes if your foot was left on the accelerator (even briefly) after the engine cut out. Happened to me after a slow spin in the wet at Rockingham a couple of weeks back. Put it down to flooding the engine - but not being technically minded I've no idea whether this is right.

Thanks for advice. The engine map was put on at Rockingham in October by the guy with the laptop so don't know whether this is latest. The car performed better as a whole since the engine mapping done but it never cut out before the remap so could be problem source. I will get Mole Valley to check out the filter as you suggest.
Noble Girl,
Because the cutting out may have been caused by a number of different things, my advice is to take your car to your dealer. If it is a mapping fault, their diagnostic equipment will find it.
Any problems, please call me at the factory.

Just for the record I have always used Optimax as per the manual and dealer advice. Car now booked into Mole Valley next week for a thorough checkout.
Simon,
Many thanks for the offer to contact the factory but let's see what Mole Valley find.
Am I now correct in assuming I can use 95RON in future as the cost saving over Optimax is considerable.

Hi NG,
You don’t say which M12 you have. I had a similar experience - I took my M12 GTO into MV for a service and the day after collecting it I had a couple of cu-out experiences. Then it failed to idle altogether. I took it back to MV and one of the mechanics sawed away with a pair of mole grips (no pun intended) but could not sort it out and the diagnosis was faulty ECU - the old Magneti Marelli type. The M12 then went back to the factory for fitment of the new ECU - non Magneti Marelli (never trust Italian electrics). It also had the latest map as of December.
Hope this helps.
Best regards,
Lynton

I've sold my car now (M12 2.5L) but had exactly the same problem as yourself!Took it in for a 6000 mile service after 12 months faultless ownership. Picked it up next day to find it was cutting out then soon thereafter would not idle at all. Took it back to dealer who diagnosed faulty ECU (Nothing to do with their service ofcourse!)
Luckily Noble replaced the ECU under warranty but it was concerning that I took in a perfectly good car and got back a faulty one!!

Marlon,
You're absolutely right! No excuses for this. However, I can assure you that 95RON IS the correct fuel for the M12.
Will make sure that the Handbook is ammended.

Oh dear, that is very unfortunate.
Here's the problem, the Optimax I have been using (under Noble's guidance) has almost certainly caused the carpets to get a bit muddy and (what more proof do you need) no more stone chips have appeared since I (quickly) switched to standard unleaded. Simon, I'll bring it round to the factory for a respray and valet next week.
