No real idea, but I'd imagine rubber starts to harden up over time - maybe your tyres were 2 or 3 years old?
Also, with taller tread blocks they will "give" more due to lateral displacement and so maybe that helps.
... or something like that....
My 3mm at the rear is still working fine.

Aps, Tyres will harden over a period of time. Also rubber (any rubber) will begin to perish.
Especialy performance tyres. They harden due to the tyre going through heat cycles which 'cures' the rubber. The grip and ride performance drops off very slowly over a period time, and it's only when you change to a new set of tyres that you really will feel a noticeable difference.
Some brands of tyres do more than others. Yokohama (on my 911RS) were very prone to this.
The rubber of the new tyres will be softer than the old ones, hence a better ride.
Cheers and Merry Christmas,
Ian.

Hi,
Thanks for that but the rears were only 1 year old and the fronts possible up to 2 years. Thought tyre pressures may have played a part but both sets maintained at factory PSI levels.
Happy New Year from contented 2.5 owner with better Darth Vader impressions!
When will we ger a high level braker light (LED preferably!) on our M12's???
