Who did you get to make your plates up for you?

I am due to collect R36 next week, all being well, and would like to have something similar made up.

Cheers,

Mark

Ask your dealer if they can make you up two sets. One 'official' set, and one 'for display only' purposes.

If you get stopped, you have just been to a show where your car was displayed, and the normal plates will be refitted when you get home. Only a right b@5tard copper will nick you.

I don't want to have my dealer make up my plates as they will automatically add their (free) advertising - something I am not in favour of! I intend to provide them with my plates to fit (the front one will be shortened width-wise to do the best for aiflow).

New regulations for the supply of numberplates mean that they can only be made up if you provide 'evidence of entitlement', eg log book, along with ID. Some dealers are stricter than other on this. When my 'sensible car' was in for service they phoned to ask whether they should replace the cracked numberplate. I said ok but changed my mind when they said I had to bring ID even though the car was up on their ramp at exactly the same time!!

Anyone got a tape measure?! I need to know the distance between the fastenings for both number plates? Thanks.

Very interesting that you can just order plates over the net: Here is a quote from guidance to the new regs:

"From 1 January 2003 all number plate suppliers in England and Wales will have to be registered with DVLA and will have to keep records of all number plate sales. If you want to buy a new plate for a trailer or caravan or to replace a broken one on your car you will have to show the registered supplier documents to prove both who you are and also that you have entitlement to the registration mark."

They will only make them up for you if you can prove that you own the plate and who you are. Typically you have to send these companies the relevant paperwork.

IIRC Fancyplates are in Ireland and you can order what you want without any paperwork.

The law only applies to England and Wales - so if you are outside those two places the government has no power to stop them making up any plate and they can stick their stupid law right up where the sun doesn't shine.

So - you can also pop over the border into Scotland and get anything you dam well like made up.

See the whole thing here www.dvla.gov.uk/vehicles/rnps.htm

Don't you love the government? Instead of passing laws to fix real problems, they fart around with people that just want to respace a few numbers or letters, and then let the police judge if it is still clear to them. At least the Scottish government told them where to stick their stupid red tape.

*sigh*

Edited to add I got mine via fancyplates.com - they will add any text you like to the bottom - so mine has what the car is and what it's 0-60 is - means I can just "point at the numberplate" when people ask me at petrol stations "how fast does it go mate"
