Speedo see sawing!

Just got the car back after its been sitting in a garage for 9 weeks! Drove it home last night and to work today. Everything was fine up until I was out this lunchtime when the speedo shot up and down erratically a few times up to the drving speed I was at then it settled down and started working as normal.
I've done a search and found the common speedo sensor / speedo problems although I'm unsure which of these it could be. Could it be that because the car has been sitting that its a bit damp and simply needs to be driven (yes i'm in denial
)?
Anyway how can I tell if its the sensor or the speedo? I've checked the plugs in the passenger footwell and they seem to be dry.
If it is the speedo are they costly to replace?
Any help would be appreciated

If you look at the connector you will se it is corroded.
I had three new sensors before we realised there was nothing wrong with it.
