I have obtained a 'spare' 6 speed box.
Plans for my own car are such that I'm anticipating a need for a high strength gear set.

We are agents for a specialists manufacturer in Australia specilising in this field, I have discussed this with them and I'm planning to send my spare box over to them to have custom gear sets assessed/made. (may change gearing to suit markedly higher power and torque spread expected)?

While this isn't a sales pitch, costs of any such kit will be lower the more firm initial interest there is. If no one else is interested I'll do it anyway , anyone showing interest after they're done can expect to pay more. Can't say fairer than that I hope?

I discussesd it with them at Autosport this year, they "suggested" circa £2.5k to £3k, depending upon what was needed to construct adapt and manufacture the gearsets.

Will have a better idea once they've got the gearbox though.

It's usually the bearings going that's the issue. They wear and the gears unmesh a bit and break. I don't think the gears themselves are the issue.

Yeah, I can imagine that being more of an issue in a normal, or lightly tweaked car with "spirited" use, all elements of these gear sets will be markedly better and capable of dealing with higher loads and "heavier abuse" than factory gears/bearings.

What about the strengthening the gearbox housing?
The requirement of transmitting much higher torque loads will likely result in distortion of the stock housing no matter what gearset is used. That could lead to cracks forming in critical areas, which, in turn, can reduce useful life.

I can't say I've seen that before personally, but It will be considered anyway. The manufacturers will be having a complete 6 speed box despatched to them for analysis.

Higher; I doubt it? That's uncommon as Gadge will probably tell you now.
I need to scan that graph to post it up, it's at work and I had the weekend of staying at the "hotel NHS" cardiac care unit last weekend so have been banned from going into work at the moment. (I'll soon get around that though). biggrin

You'll have to bring your car up and run it on our new dyno (DD of course as they're the best available), should be installed soon, due to complete on our new building front end of July.

I have had my car back to back on the Crazy Horses Dyno Dynamics rollers and the Rollers at Track 'n' Road dyno in Rainham. The DD rollers were about 10-15% more optimisic than Track 'n' Roads dyno!!!

I doubt anyone will show interest in a 'box until it's proven to be stronger than a standard one.

Maybe you could try to get it in a race car? Then if it lasts a season you should get some takers.

These people make gear sets for our Impreza and evo's, they work. If you're interested, give us a call? What we do over the next year or so with my 3R might be of some interest to you?

I doubt anyone will show interest until it's proven in a Noble and if that's what you're about to do then that's great.
And when it's proven in a Noble I'll be interested but until then I'm not removing the engine and changing a gearbox on a promise that the gear sets work well on other cars!

Yup, as per the original post, that's exactly the plan behind getting a spare gearbox. smile
I'll report on progress as/when there is any.
