OK, I was wondering firstly if anyone could possibly give me some advice?

Please don't judge me, but my experiences of censored have been nothing short of appalling and I feel their customer service levels have a lot to be desired.

So I leave my M12 GTO in the very capable hands of Minister Power in Chatham. They know what they're doing, love working on the car and don't charge stupid prices.

Anyway, cutting to the chase, first out the box, it turns out I need an 'engine overhaul'. Four out of the six cylinders are losing about 30% after a compression test. After idling from cold for about 2-3 minutes it will start to push out oily blue smoke, but it isn't losing any oil (not noticeably so). I've been advised this could be down to the valve guides, so keeping an eye on it.

The car doesn't feel down on power to drive, but there is so much there it's hard to tell sometimes. It still drives very, very well.

I've been quoted about £2,500 - £3,000 for the overhaul to be done. But I thought it was a Ford Duratec V6. Are they that expensive to work on??

I've just had to have the fan leads redone after they corroded and the car overheated. Apparently they corroded due to where they are situated and the dirt and salt from the road. Out of interest, has anyone else had the same problem?

The car has done 30K now, and this is the only issue. How long do the engines generally tend to last before needing a rebuild?

And one final topic that I know has been touched on many a time: I need four new brake discs, but AP won't talk to me. I refuse to pay Noble prices. So just for four discs (the pads are sorted now), can anyone give me any advice on these please?

ETA

Please DO NOT Name and Shame as it is in breach of the rules of posting.

Is it a 2.5 or a 3.0?
Does that price include removal and refitting the engine?
I would also suggest while the engine is out putting a new clutch in.

Discs..I use Questmead..see my post on nobleparts..AP stockist very helpful, very good prices, for example Noble dealer want around the £120+vat for front DS2500 pads, Questmead supply at £78+vat (IIRC)

Warm the car up. go for a little drive and when safe to do so accelerate to around 6k rpm
and then let off the throttle and slow right down to 2k rpm put your foot to the floor again, if you see a puff of blue smoke initially this could point to valve guides / seals (discounting any turbo problems).
Discs you're basically fked, grooved after market fronts are available from Plans et al rears as far as I know are Noble bespoke.
I think you'll be very lucky to see change from £500.00 if fitted by yourself.
As far as the engine is concerned, officially it's about 8 hours to remove and the same to re fit.
So a good proportion of the money is just getting at the engine!
parts for that motor are generally inexpensive but you may want to up-rate a few items.
Ask for a quote from John Noble motorsport and they will help you decide on what's necessary for your application.
They have quoted engine work for me in the past and it was VERY competitive.

rantingBy the way censored. Never go there unless you want to be bent over and spanked for a lacklustre job at best (my front turbo hose blew off after fifty miles).

Another easy way to check valve guide integrity is to find a long hill to drive down in (any) gear with the throttle completely closed. After about 15 seconds, or so, open the throttle quickly and look for a puff of oil smoke out the exhaust. That smoke indicates oil in the valve train/head is getting into the cylinders through the valve guides under high vacuum.

I've just blown my inlet manifold @41k. Had a compression test and all cylinders are within 5% of each other....

I'm no expert but could this just (i say just as it cost me 2k) be the head gasket?

2k for a head gasket!!!!
are you sure it was just a gasket?
I was quoted £600 for having the valves re-ground inc fitting, I'm assuming the heads can come off with the engine in situ on your car, apparently on the M400 the heads can be removed without removing the engine.

Got to admit with the overheating as well that sounds like a possibility.
Mine got compression tested and was found to be fine - 28K miles on it.
Like mentioned, talk to JNM - they are competitive and know their stuff.

Yep, thats how much I was charged by one of our service agents. I'd just had the diff done also so when I got the car back I wasn't happy with the temp it was running it was then found that the HG was going so I had big bill around those 2 months (6k). (just checked bill to confirm.

Simple answer to first question is NO.

FYI, upgrades for U.S. built Noble motors include: forged (and lower compression) pistons, improved internal oiling, blueprint and balance.

I think Gadgeroonie was thinking of importing one from the USA. With the Dollar where it is I think a full engine costs about 1.5 x what you've been quoted...but with the life I've led and the state of my memory I may be miles out!

Thank you all for your advice, you don't know just how much it is appreciated.

The head gasket was my first thought, but it turned out it isn't the head gasket. I think it overheated because the fans stopped working (without me knowing), it was taken on a hard run and left idling on a hot day.

I will undoubtedly contact JNM and Kerridges in due course, so thank you for that.

New engine from AER is $4600 ex works.
M400 spec, also has oil squiters for the piston skirts, which IIRC the UK engines dont.

All UK engines built for the factory had oil squirters. That was one of the developments JNM used to make the engines reliable and one that the US had to get AER to put in when building the US engines.

The engines are a bit more complex than just a Ford Duratec with a couple of blowers hung on - JNM did a good job for Lee in developing the engines as he wanted.
