odd noise from my Noble

I can hear a noise - which I think is coming from the engine- that increases in line with the engine speed, doesn't stop when I put it into neutral and yet despite getting the mechanic to sit with me, he hasn't able to identify the cause.
Its difficult to describe- and in some ways it almost sounds like a road surface noise - except I've driven my Noble everyday for two years for 100 miles a day, never heard it before and so I know I'm not imagining it!
At one time I thought it might even have been a wheel wobble but I can't feel anything through the steering and I've had the tyres changed recently.
I guess it could also be described as pistons working overtime.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?

when slowing down i.e. go along in 5th or 6th and take your foot off the throttle and slow down, if you do this does it make the same noise?
Just noticed you say it does it out of gear, which would make what i said rubbish. Could be loose heat sheilds, engine bay side panels, or loose/rattly handbrake shoes/springs.

Yes, it makes the same noise, it just slows down in line with the engine speed. The only time I can't hear it is up to about 20- 30 mph. Funnily enough though, I mentioned to the garage that I thought the turbo guage was running a bit low. They disagreed but in view of your first comment maybe I should get it checked again
You mention that you have just had new tyres fitted.
what are they, Bridestone? Are the new tyres different from the ones you had before?
Could it be tyre noise?
Driving 100 miles a day, you know what is right and what is not, just difficult to explain to someone else.

Thought I'd get back with the outcome to the odd noise on my Noble- and it was the wheel bearing and the Hub- and a small issue with the heating- £1900!! But at least I know what its like when a bearing is on the way out - and thats usful because I'm told Noble know they have a problem...........

That's not a small issue with the heating there (£1900)! What was up?as silly as it might sound, I would also check the right front corner of the engine bay. A few years back I had the hose from the turbo up front going back to the intercooler slide downwards in that front mount, and hence started touching that serpetine pulley on the corner of the engine. Took some time and carefule looking to find it, but hasnt happened since due to a modification to the bracket to not allow the hose to slide down anymore.
