I bought my lovely number plate 55 GN 4 years ago for about £3800 all in at a dvla auction and as I was not very rich at the time I popped it up for sale the very next day.

Its been up for sale for £5k (to return that to me) ever since, and yesterday I was offerend just shy of that amount for it.

Now I know that its a very personal thing and would depend on each persons financial position but I don't know wheather to sell or not!

I jsut wonder what you chaps think about the fufure value of plates? Its the first offer in 4 years so I'm thinking "sell". I've never been a particularly "flashy" type of chap ( i'd have a ferrari if I was!!) So I'm wondering what you think about future values and selling up....................

If its worth £5K now, it could be worth that and maybe more another day so ask yourself one question punk - do ya like the plate, well do ya?"

Greg, if you wanted £4500 cash left over for beer money then DVLA has some reasonably priced replacement GTO plates left:

V4 GTO and V7 GTO - £399 - join VX GTO club!
W6 GTO - £399 - my fave, looks like Martin's from a distance
X6 and Y6 GTO - £499

Also as you know it is a low liquidity item so you may never get another offer... 25% in 5 years isn't a great return anyway!

Pretty poor investment really - I'd flog it now (if it was purchased as an investment, and this is your only offer in 4 yrs), or keep or forever (assuming you're not gonna change sex/name etc etc) and forget about the money.

My girlfriend has been trying to sell her plate for a few months now, she paid around £1000 about 5 years ago and she can't shift it for £400 now ! Sound investment

Not really bought as an investment, more cause I liked it and assumed that it would always return me at least what I paid for it.

Anyway, the plate I always really wanted is going to be put in an auction for me within the next 18 months. I spoke to the dvla and its never been issued!

So I'm going to keep 55 GN for now and try to sell it again if and when I get the other one.

No harm in keeping it forever I guess. Can't see "them" changing the number plate system in my lifetime.

Vanity plates are lame unless its really good. You should get GN 1 or not bother imho

According to my local rag, Essex County Council have just sold 'F1' for £375,000. Not to our Bernie either, but some local businessman. Apparently highest price paid thus far for a personal plate. You might ask what ECC were doing with such a number plate in the first place, but that's another story I'm sure.

From what I read of this, they've had it since 1904, and things were a little different then. Schoolfriend of mine had had HRH2 in his family since around then, and was running it on a really dodgy white Metro

My paper said they were going to use the money to teach young people to drive, I havent seen any adverts for free driving lessons yet, i know i'm a bit dim but i really didnt understand this.
