MTX-75 Gearbox
Discussion
Quaife offer 2 gear kits for the 5 speed MTX-75 gearbox as fitted to the early cars. A synco kit £1200, and a straight cut dog-change kit £1500, Quaife state these kits will handle 500bhp! I have used Quaife products on other car I have owned, and their products do what they say they do? I wondered if anyone has used this set up????

The Gearboxman also lists both these kits on his web site?? The MTX-75 gearbox is easy and cheap to get hold of and by removing the gearbox as our friends in the States do easy to fit! I am looking at fitting the Quaife Synco kit along with the Quaife diff to a spare MTX-75 gearbox I have unless someone tells me this has been tried before???

I wouldn't use the Quaife dog engagement gear-kit on a road car. These gears are straight cut and would make for a very noisy gearbox (comparable to driving in reverse - reverse is normally straight cut whilst all forward gears are helically cut). Also the dog engagement requires some real finesse to get each gear-change right. This mod is really only suited to a race car. The sychro kit however would be a fine mod. This will reduce the internal friction as the gears run on roller bearings. I'd go for this if I were you.

Richie,
In order to get the right ratios you need to do a bit of maths. The correct ratios should be determined by looking at your power and torque curves. Determine the usable rev range of your engine and then calculate the ratios to keep the engine within the desired power band. Additionally you might want to consider what final drive ratio to use at the same time.

Here we go again. All the gearbox / clutch people say 'my product will handle xxxBHP, no problem' and it's a bunch of cock statement! BHP with drivetrain parts is generally totally meaningless. Torque is the measure. Go to them and state you'll be putting 450ft/lbs through their kit, and watch them back peddle.Gassing Station | Noble | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
