Do you know whats happened? The 5th gear is the weak point in the six speeder, have you got a good diagnosis?
Dave
The AA diagnosed it as the exhaust blowing somewhere! The local dealer are saying its the gearbox. The " noise " is def louder in 5th.Dave
Is this normal- the bill is " you better sit down" !
Any ideas how I can tell if I have had a good dianosis ?

Get it shot peened (spelling?) and you get more power to the wheels into the bargain.

You maybe iterested in the way the Americans remove the Gearbox as it may save you a good few pennies. The std way means removing the whole lump i think, the americans either remove and reweld a chassis member or rebolt back in to allow a sideways removal and reduce the cost. If the lump comes out get it well looked over before refit as you dont want double costs on this
Please don't get too impressed by "shot peened" These gears are usually made from an alloy case hardening steel such as EN 36B. Shot peening merely reduces the chance of surface cracking after the quench which could lead to premature failure. That does not produce more power or allow more power to be transmitted.
My fifth gear also went, it started as a rumbling in fifth gear only when on hard boost but soon became a crunching sound as well as the car jolting which felt like teeth jumping each other.
Soon after any use of fifth gear was out of the question.
It seems the bearings etc were ok and it was probably the gear itself turning on its shaft !
I had a new gear box fitted.

My gearbox has been treated like this and had proper bearings put in and is quite happily taking 520lbs of torque, and lots of abuse, so whatever they do it works. I believe the fault on the fifth gear shaft is that it has a bush on the end of the shaft sitting in a boss in the casing, this wears causing a bad mesh, if the bush?shaft goes with a bang it may go through the gearbox casing, therefore if it is making a lot of noise it really isnt a good idea to drive it.
From memory Competition Transmissions (Gearboxman) charged about £800 to check upgrade and recondition my gearbox.

Did that price include removal and replacement?
