Does anyone know how much a replacement wheel costs? Whilst washing the car yesterday I noticed a chunk out of one of the rims and on closer inspection, the rim is slightly deformed. I suspect this is due to hitting a pothole on a trip to Leeds - their roads resemble the Somme battlefield!
Whilst I think about it, does anyone have any experience of getting a local authority to cough up for damage caused due to poor road maintenance?

Write to the appropiate council and ask them for a claim form. However, be aware that they will normaly try to stop paying for damage...

Have tried unsuccessfully to claim before, but am told you only succeed if they have failed to repair in reasonable time, eg if they are told and do nothing about it then they are negligent. I'd say they are negligent to let the pothole develop in the first place, but thats another story....
My solicitor said the council replied to say I should have photographed the pothole and put a ruler next to it so they can see the size. Why do they expect me to carry a camera and ruler when out driving!!!

Thought that might be the case, I was planning to take some photos with a ruler down said pothole before contacting them (and there are that many potholes that I might take photos of a few hundred more just to keep the council busy if they decide they're going to bodge them in).
Checked with HR Owen on prices for replacement wheels: £444 for a rear and £361 for a front (both plus VAT of course!) Now I'm proper mad!!!

It is up to the local counil or Highway Agency to maintaint the road act 51 or something, basically as said before, if you can prove that someone has complained about the pothole and nothing has happened then action can be taken against the local authority, now I am pretty sure that either autocar or some other mag went into the finer details about 3 months ago! You could always find a local pothole get a mate to write a suitabe letter and send it to the council, now I would suppose that a suitable time to repair it would be 2-3 weeks, if nothing has happened by then I am sure the wheel could possibly get damaged???
These things happen. If they refuse then it the small claims court!!
