M12 tinted glass?
Discussion
There is a place near us that does window tints. They use film and not glass, but the results from the examples I've seen are very good, no need to worry about peeling or the like. They are expensive, but you pays your money... Still cheaper than the glass route however! And at least with film you can remove it if you changed your mind.
They are in Huntingdon, just past the top of the M11 near Cambridge. www.car2tint.com

Thanks Anthony but, as the car is yet to be built, I was hoping that there might be a low-cost option for tinted glass to be added at build-time in S. Africa?
I've just given them a call as I was thinking of getting the windows tinted (and as I live near Huntingdon it couldn't be much more convenient if I tried ). I quite like the idea of tinted film as it provides protection against the windows getting put through by some scrote trying to nick the car/stereo etc. I will investigate costs etc in more detail (he wasn't familiar with a Noble so I'll probably take the car around to him to get a firm quote) and post the price once I know.
A mate had some film professionally fitted (not at car2tint), which cost him around £300, which I thought was expensive, but it did look good and very neat. I suppose shopping around may find a better deal.
Sidekick, what are your plans for going up to PistonFest? Fancy meeting up somewhere along the A14 on Sunday morning.

Good point Rob. I shall definitely ask them about degredation due to heat when I take the car over to them. I was thinking of having the side windows and quarterlights done and to be honest I'd forgotten about the rear window (I never use it ) until the tinting guy mentioned it to me!
hi guys
I had my ML tinted two years ago. I ve used it in fairly hot conditions(ibiza for the most of last August) and it still looks like new. providing the quality of film that the company uses is the best it usually lasts well. the problem is finding a company that does not skimp on the fim.

HROwen arranged for mine to have "light smoke" film installed at this place:

If I were doing it again, I'd be tempted to go for dark smoke instead. Although light smoke is plenty dark enough to make it difficult to see into the car at night.

Jim, which car did you have done (if the Noble which glass and do you have any photos:?) and wouldn't the dark smoke impair general vision on all but a sunny day?

You have email...

Light smoke is fine, even at night, so I should imagine dark smoke would not be a problem during the day. It's only reduces light levels by 50%, which given the difference in light levels between a sunny day and an overcast one, isn't much.

Got mine done at car2tint at the weekend, I went for medium tint, which looks great on the door windows and 1/4lights. The rear window could have stood a darker tint, but I thought it might be useful not to go too dark (so I can still stand a chance of seeing approaching plod car in the dark). Kirby at car2tint was great - he was happy to spend last Sunday evening doing the car so it would be ready for PistonFest (said he was fully booked out for the next fortnight). The results are superb - I think it would be difficult to tell the difference between film and proper smoked glass. There are a couple of photos at www.car2tint.com , including a before/after comparison in the Gallery section. Total cost was £230. Can thoroughly recommend getting it done and also car2tint for anyone in the Huntingdon/Cambs area.

Nice one Sidekick - did he have to remove the door window glass or not and is the film on the inside? I hope you got a discount for letting them use your steed for advertising purposes!!!
Thanks AMG. No, he didn't have to remove the door panel or window glass (the inside rubber door window seal just push fits onto the inner door panel so he was able to just pull it off to get access to the glass below the door line). The film is on the inside of the glass and is guaranteed for for as long as I own the car, the only stipulation being not to wind the window down for 3 days after the film has been applied. No discount for advertising I'm afraid, however he did say that he's planning some sexy car/girl photo shoots for magazine advertising and asked if I'd mind lending my car for some scantily clad model to drape herself over (me, mind?... )

Yeh, and I bet you won't be washing that bonnet for a while afterwards!!!
Hi James, yes - Kirby was doing your Supra when I called around to introduce him to the Noble. He's a great guy (despite saying about three times that the Noble looks really good for a kit car! ). I took the liberty of a quick look around your Supra - very nice car - are you pleased with the window tints?
Yeah, I'm very pleased with the window tints and he's done a good job (couldn't believe he did the whole thing in under 3 hours!)
He reckoned my Supra was just like a Mitsubishi FTO which I wasn't too impressed about, but I let it go
I wasn't sure if I'll have any problems at MOT time as the tints are very dark (Kirby said about 20% light transmission). I read that the legal limit is 70% for the front windows (which is almost no tint at all!), but apparently it's not in an MOT tester's remit to test them.
