Simplified Transaxle change out

After some mods it appears that the Noble's transmission/diff assembly can be removed and installed w/o pulling the motor .

looks good. is there anything that could be taken out to speed up the engine removal? how long does it take to remove the tranny like this?

It's obviously quicker to cut your subframe about but who really wants to start cutting their car up?
Having said that they've replaced the cut piece with a "bolt in" rather than re-welding it, so if they don't have any flexing issues it's probably ok.
I just wouldn't want to be the first to try it out over here.

Knowing Hoover as I do, I'd bet that the bolt-in replacement is more than adequate to maintain the chassis' integrity. There is nothing half-arsed about the way he and his team does things. The beauty of the bolt-in replacement is that it allows any future work in that area to be done more easily. This is probably something that should have been designed into the chassis to begin with so that tranny work/changes wouldn't require engine removal, IMHO.

Richard Marshall, Ex of Ex Vegantune, talked me through this mod (or one very very like it) some time back. In the end I decided to go the engine out route but this transatlantic reassurance might change my mind about that next time.

Guys - would you still have to do an engine out to put a 6 spd in because of the other changes you need to make?

Note that Hoover has added some info to the original thread.
Also, the idea of using removable (bolt-in) elements in tube frame chassis is certainly not new; and, as Craig says, a mod like this will not compromise stiffness if done properly.

also worth remembering that most folks with a retro-fitted trackday sump probably have a cross member cut out already !
