S***. Hope I haven't done anything silly by taking off the silencer for a bit.
I accelerated hard yesterday coming off a roundabout, enjoying the enormous noise, only to see quite a large plume of white smoke pour out of the back. I slowed immediately and went slowly through town in the direction of home.

I gave it another blast just before home and got no smoke at all. Noise coming from the exhaust sounded a bit more 'parpy' than usual (don't know how else to explain it) although this may have been psychological. Today I was putting the silencer back on to find a small leak of what looks like oil dripping from the rear turbo to air filter pipe. Looks like this pipe has a small hole in it to allow the drip - but should there be oil in this pipe in the first place? Sounds bad to me :-(.

And it's lovely today as well......

Hhhmmm well the white smoke is oil smoke. I know you'd think it'd be blue, but if as I suspect it's coming from a turbo so I'll be white. Turbo seal most probably. frown

Sounds like it. Usually most smoky when starting up hot (not cold). Cost of re-furn (seals and bearings if nothing else damaged) is about £230 inc VAY

Certainly sounds like an oil seal yes
Go steady, it was blowing oil like that that led to the level drop that killed my engine. Ben and Ben will be able to confirm! They might suggest you nip down to Moulton Park and have a word with turbo technics mate.

Thanks for the tip - I saw turbo technics mentioned on an older post (can't remember if it was you who mentioned them). They look like good guys to get in touch with given their list includes the Garrett make. And close-ish too clap.

Not sure my hammer technique is going to solve this one hehe.

As usual, thanks for all the inputs. thumbup

TT will certainly refurb it, but it'll need to be off the car !

Remember removing the silencer will also have put more strain on the downpipes as the Choccy bracket will not have been there, or all the rubber mounts.

some turbo's need some back pressure for the seals to work

stick the silencer back on and see if it goes

The T25's on the Fiat Coupe would normally weep after decatting due to lack of backpressure in as little as 100 miles.

Ahh, that's interesting. I've already put the silencer back on - will I need to thrash it or will a gentle drive restore the back pressure required? Just a bit wary about giving it a good going over after Owen mentioned breaking his engine.

Also, does anybody know where I can get a set of bolts to assemble the exhaust properly? The old ones had corroded so badly I had to hack them off. Just got a set of basic bolts for the time being but it looks a bit amateurish at the mo.

The back pressure is there as soon as you turn the key, it is the slightly rsestrictive nature of the exhaust/silencer that gives the pressure. TBH it may be that the silencer was hiding an issue you alre4ady had. I would suspect that the reason the H & S and Roush exhausts work so well is that they are very free flowing. The Noble T25's may well have better mechanical seals that a std T25?
Once a turbo seal has let oil pass as far as i know it wil keep doing so.

Forgive my ignorance, but if the H&S and Rousch exhausts are more free flowing (a lot of people have mentioned this) then doesn't that have implications for the turbo seals in general? Or are they changed/upgraded too?

Whilst they are "freer", they aren't "free" flowing.

Ah OK. Thought that might be a bit of silly question. Well I guess I'll take it out today and give it a gentle run and see if the oil remains. Still prepared for the worst, although in terms of some of the problems others have been unlucky to have it doesn't sound like it's going to be the end of the world. Thanks to all.

Turbos are easy to fix. Also, don't feel too bad, my Ur Quattro goes through them about one every 10,000 miles....

Sorry for the bump, but just an update if anyone's interested (and if you're not). Got a 2nd hand silencer from Noble Motorsport and stuck it on. Started the car, got smoke. Warmed up and revved - got smoke. Then after about 2 minutes the smoking slowed and stopped altogether. Took it for a gentle drive and it appeared fine. Took it for a bit more of spirited drive and it was also fine.

Took it for a blast when it was getting dark and it was fantastic until I heard a massive bang. :-(
Turns out someone had dropped some DIY material on the road (black so I didn't even get a hint it was there in the dark) and had just left it there. Scared the sh** out of me though!

After all that it looks like it might have been a gentle reminder to sort out the silencer. spin

As an aside, I noticed my 'new' one has a black coating that my old one doesn't. It also looks like the perforated silencing pipes inside the silencer go right up to both of the exit holes to the tailpipes whereas my old one has an 'r' shaped pipe which ends in the middle of the guts of the silencer. Has my old been 'modified' by cutting out the internals or did the design change slightly for newer GTO3's? Doesn't really matter, just interested. :-)

If your old one has spot welds around the silencer there is a good chance one of the baffles worked loose and the last owner had the silencer modified to get rid of the rattling. Can i ask how much you paid for the second hand one? Wouldnt mind a spare, especially if it is better than the one i have on!

Of course. It was 125 + VAT (not fitted).
