Broken gear box/diff?

The last 24 hours have been terrible!!
I drove up to Colchester Zoo yesterday moring at 8am and have only just this minute returned on the back of a flat bed.
It all started on my way home at around 5pm. Sitting in the outside lane of the A12 at around 60mph in fifth. Car moves out of the way and I increase the throttle slightly and BANG!!
Some horrible grinding banging about noise from the centre of the car and no drive in fifth, PANTS. I came to a stop and called the AA. Whilst waiting (No hard shoulder!!!) I found that the car had drive in first and reverse.
Anyway, cut a vert long story short and a massive complaint to the AA I was finally rescued this morning at 9am.
I think the box has stripped fifth and the remains are hanging around in the box cuasing the noise. The car has drive in 1st and reverse. It starts and idles smoothly. I get the noise when in gear or when in neutrel. The noise stops totally when the clutch is depressed. Luckily the drive in first and reverse meant that I could get on and off the lorries, yes lorries okay.
I will be looking to get the box done and a LSD at the same time. Does any one have any advice on who do use?
Looks like I have some serious over time to do!!

Ah, so it was you I saw James 
. I went past in the GT a little while after and saw you and yours standing just down from the car (nice to see someone actually standing in the right place away and back down the road from their vehicle).
Was it a GTO3 with a 5 speed then? If so I think it's probably a matter of fact now that it's only a matter of time before 5 speeds let go.
As for who to do the work, where are you based?

You've got Kerridges up in Needham Market who are excellent with Nobles. 01449 720222 ask for David Foster.
Or you have Mole Valley neat Leatherhead just inside M25 I think. They are very good too.
The specialists of old will all struggle to get parts now afaik.
With something like this I suggest usuing a real "dealer" as it'll make selling it on with all the correct paperwork much easier.
I would also recommend looking into getting a 6 speed with LSD and an M400 linkage whilst you're in there. May aswell also change the clutch and get a track sump if you don't already.
The bill will be large but you'll massivly up the value and saleablility of the car, not to mention make it far sweeter to drive! (6 speed is far better and the M400 linkage is amazing by comparisson - I want one

Sorry to hear that mate, it was only a few weeks ago we chatted about the gearbox as well. That tempting fate thing is dangerous......
Cheapest option would be a secondhand box rebuilt (preferably with a LSD), I suspect yours is now scrap judging by what you have said. I know the 6 speed option is very expensive, I'm sure someone will be along in a minute to advise on the costs on this.

So the AA strike again.... Had me/other half waiting for 4 hours a month ago.. Firstly they put another calls phone number on our job so when they are driving around looking for us they have no contact and drive off again.. I return the call half after the supposed arrival time. So wait another hour. Then even tho i told them to tow the car outside of the car park (dam subaru alarm & mobile phone mast) then we could start it. Oh no... cant do that sir it will break the G/b or dif... i say it will be ok, slowly tow it outta the car park... Nope sorry its a full lift required... another hour and a half later the full lift arrives. Tow the car home winch it off the lorry and i start it and pull it onto the drive...

It is the Diff that is the weak link, mine went a while ago 2 days after a remap.
I went for the 6 speed box/lsd/m400 linkage.
If you go for the 6 speed, there are quite a few other bits that need changing, engine mounts/lower wishbone/fuel tank(possibly).
I disagree with Greg about only using a Noble dealer, plenty of people out there capable of doing the job, cheaper. (Plans for one). As DG said, a 5 speed with lsd seem to work quite well and can be a cheaper solution.

However, they did mention that it was hard to find a 5 speed box at the moment as they have run out. I would be happy with the 5 spd but obviously it would need strengthening. Does any one know how, where and how much that costs?
This has come at a bad time money wise for me, so I will have to discuss it with the BOSS (My other half).
I will be ringing around for qoutes ASAP, but this bloody work thing is getting in the way.

Sorry to hear that James, I went through all this after 2 mnths of ownership not nice. Plans did mine and it was a bit more than 3.5k I think it was 4k. I asked about 6spd and M400 link and if I remember the linkage was 1.8k and about the same to fit it and the 6spd takes a bit more work to get it fitted.
There is no reason unless your loaded to go to the 6spd. But making the 5spd stronger is a must (i'm gutted I didn't do this as I'm now at 3,3r power and expect it to go sometime).
The gearbox man is the guy to use I'm told and I think Gary (CH) has a guy he uses (maybe the same guy). If you don't do 6spd maybe while the engine is out you could stengthen a few things inside?

When I killed my 5 speed it was the open diff that went(about 5 teeth missing)
M400 linkage "kit" from noble is arount £600 IIRC, not £1800.
6 speed box is just a standard ford item with a LSD fitted.
Shame as one on ebay went for £185 last week.(diff fitted is around £550)

I'm sure i was quoted 1800 from Noble for the linkage, I think thats what it cost daddysumo too.
