My 3R is going into Plans next month for a service and a few repairs. I was considering my first mod and thought a upgraded intercooler would prevent the dreaded heat soak and performance drop off on the track. But they want £1200 + vat.

This is too surely too expensive, what are the alternatives?? Has anyone had the plans intercooler installed? Is it any good?

The NobleMods offers two (£650, £750) not including fitting. Would these be as good? (I’ve read his rant)

Was it not the pro-alloy one that most find very good. Trevor at roush recommended it too. I'm pretty sure it was a reasonable cost.

Yes, i think it is the double core intercooler from pro alloy. Priced at £695 on the pro alloy site.

I assume this is the one that the Graham talked about on the NobleMods site "has the most ridiculous end-tank design on any intercooler I have ever seen".

Do you know if it requires any irreversible mods to the intercooler box?

This Intercooler requires the box and a few hoses to be cut. It is not a reversible mod unless you get a new box and hoses.

There are various opinion's on what is the best one to go for but this one added approx 20bhp to my car. Any upgrade over the standard one is worth while. I had the Faulk's intercooler before this one and that made a big difference over the standard one. The pro-alloy one was another jump forward and worth the money. smile

And just like everybody else Graham is entitled to his opinion.

hmmm 20bhp you say. I'm more interested in reducing the heat soak on track days but a bit of extra power is a bonus.

Andy, you say worth the money but does £1200 + vat not sound a bit pricey to you?

It does, even with "the dodgy end tanks" ive witnessed the before and after, and that was against a pace cooler,

good stuff smile
must be something to do with it helping it breathe.
I always thought the IC's were about preventing power loss rather than adding !

That'll be the dodgy end boxes allowing it to breath.

But then, think of the power gain if those were sorted out to be less dodgy.,....

I agree, so are people saying the intercooler actually adds power to the car in all conditions? I understand that as owen says it can stop you losing power, but never heard of one adding power over one that is already upgraded.
If that is the case I will be more than happy to buy one on the understanding it will add 20bhp...

Anyone up for a proper independent test of this?

If there's sufficient flow through the cooler, or the fans are always running, then I guess it will always cool the incoming air and present an advantage over standard ?

IIRC the real difficulties where were the intake temps climbed high enough to make the ECU inhibit the motor... or is that el crappo !

It does sound a little on the high side. £816 for the intercooler then £594 for labour. Doesn't that work out to be 7 hours labour? Sounds like you might want to talk to Plans again. Maybe that price included vat? wink

I think the pro alloy one does not come with fans...thats extra..but i could be wrong!!

Sure some of that money is better spent stopping the heat actually getting to the intercooler in the first place...
Nimbus GII works very well, both underneath the intercooler box and inside it under the intercooler, stops a massive amount of the heat from the rear turbo pasing through the bottom of the IC box.

The £1200 + vat includes 2 fans. Still not cheap, I'll call them again tomorrow and firm up the price.

I had my car on the same rolling road before and after the intercooler was fitted and the bhp went up by 20bhp. The only other difference was the accoustic pipes (Roush) had been fitted but you would expect them to reduce power rather then increase it. I have the plots but only on paper at the moment. Trevor, any chance you can post the plots?

After that run we (Trevor) went on to change the throttle body and create a new map and we only saw about a 5bhp drop in power as everything got hot. My car is now running 398.9BHP and 400.8lb/ft. Not bad for a GTO3. biggrin

That is interesting, on that same rolling road, my car was 390bhp, without the throttle body or intercooler or the roush exhaust, so if that is the case swapping my intercooler should give me 410bhp...Trevor I might be interested.
