225-40 to 235-40 upgrade okay?

As it looks like i have picked up a bit of a puncture and used tyreweld to get me out the poo today my attention has been drawn to tyres. Basically, for the only reason of rim protection can anyone see a problem in going up one size in tyre on the front? Also anyone have direct real world experience side by side of the 050 and the nero rosso? all about the same price. Cheers Adam
About 80 in the US have been running on 235/40R18. Slightly less understeer than the 225. Slightly more accurate speedo. Those are the only two real differences, and both are very very small differences. I doubt you'll get much rim protection with that change though.

In terms of the tires, there is no Nero Rosso. It's either the Pirelli P-Zero Nero or the Pirelli P-Zero Rosso. Neither are very good, IMHO. They're both OK (not great) when newer, but as they wear, they get slick and very noisy. They're both prone to cupping too.
In terms of the Bridgestones, the best choice would be the Bridgestone Potenza RE-01R. They're Bridgestone's top of the line, and are perhaps the best non semi-slick available.
If you can't get those, then pay attention to which RE050 you're getting. There are 7 models: (RE050, RE050 RFT, RE050A, RE050A RFT, RE050A Pole Position, RE050A Scuderia, RE050A II RFT). The one you want is the RE050A Pole Position. There's actually a pretty reasonably difference in performance between the models.

i had a blonde moment and meant rosso aysemetrical, not nero rossa, sorry. I need a good all round tyre, so something inspired for the track will not suit me. Not seen anywhere selling the 050 pole, only the 050A. Will have a better look tomorrow. If there is no rim protection advantage i will prob go for std size ( i am a crap driver so wouldnt noticve the lack of understeer)

I agree with greg, I have the nitrons and corsas, gonna fit R888's when they die (if i get a chance to drive the thing!!)
BIG improvement over standard.

Unfortunately, my comments about the Rosso's are true. I have some on my wife's E60 M5, which are just over 1/2 worn. They're loud and grip horribly (wet & dry).
BTW, objective tests:
Bridgestone S-03 Pole Position vs Michelin Pilot Sport vs Pirelli P-Zero Rosso Assimetrico:

As you can see, the S-03 won pretty much across the board for performance.
