Is the Power Socket Line Clean?

Fitted a new head unit recently and noticed that there is dirty power (earth leak?) on the auxiliary power socket. Sure it's OK for powering a mobile phone or SatNav unit but has anyone powered a device with an audio signal (eg: an iPod) and is/was there background noise?

It's a royal pain in the ar5e to be honest. I've got a hardrive MP3 player (the Denson one that pretends to by a CD multichanger), and getting rid of all the noise took ages. In the end decouplers in the audio line worked, but I had all manor of other powerline chokes etc before that.

Thanks Phil, so it isn't just my car then! I was going to try the choke/supressor route but sounds like I shouldn't bother - what are decouplers and where do I get them?

Well, you may need a supressor anyway, but most of my noise was killed using a ground loop isolator. The place I got mine is shut now, but this looks similar to mine http://caraudiosecurity.com/shop/prod

Ah, so where do you fit this then - it isn't anything to do with the power socket or line id it?

Sits between the source device and the head unit on line-in. It doesn't filter the power line at all.

Ah, no good to me then. I think I'll reroute the aux power socket to the same power pickup tht the radio uses as I know its clean.

can you not just run a new power cable directly fron the battery to the new HU?

I put one of these in as well works very well. - Mind you you can't hear the noise over the car noise!!!
