As a regular on the London Tunnel runs I met a fellow Noble owner at one such event last summer, chap called Toby.

Very helpful fella, answered lots of questions I had but something he did say that worried me was that the rear turbo don't tend to last that long, maybe 4-5000 miles as they overheat. Is this true?

Never herd that before, I'm on 21k with both original turbos.

Mine's on nearly 20k on originals. More important is to warm up properly before take off and also to cool down before turning the engine off.

A had an oil seal fail on my rear turbo at under well under 10,000 miles - 90p part to fit and 90 mnutes labour (as as a lot of ancilliaries needed removing to get to the blighter!) You haven't lived until you've seen hot turbo oil dripping onto a hot exhaust! yikes

No knowledge of a turbo itself failing that early though.

Well you got a beauty there. It was after seeing his car that convinced me that my next car would be a Noble.
I'm probibly six weeks away from getting one, gotta sell mine first then start looking.

Yup, they can go early. I know of about 3. But, if you let it cool down properly before you switch it off, and even better add some more cooling for it, failure is rare. Fitting a Roush exhaust helps too as it reduces temperatures under the hood.

A Roush exhaust reduces the backpressure tho, so this can help the turbo seals fail early

Very rarely the rear turbo, the front one gets much more cooked as it's in an awkward position between the cabin and the lump. 4-5k miles is an absolute worst case though, they'll do loads ore than that !

Agree with Obes - it's 'usually' the front turbo not the rear that you get overheating problems with. Under most normal road-driving conditions with perhaps the occasional track-day thrown in, you shouldn't really have a problem with it. For more dedicated track-day users there are a variety of ways to aid cooling. Some have use top mounted fans, others (such as myself) have gone a different route and channeled cool air from the front of the car through the central tunnel to cool the front turbo. This has the added benefit of allowing you to open the windows in summer (or winter, if you so wish) without sucking back the hot air from around the front turbo into the cabin. Gear knob and handbrake are now permanently cool/cold! Highly recommended. Roush can do this, so e-mail Yellowshed if you're interested in this mod.

Yep, it's not a difficult DIY job if you've got the time !
Have a look here I ran some cooling from the front of the car to the front turbo when I took the engine out.

Funnily enough it was after seeing Toby's car on a tunnel run that I decided to sell my Evo VIII MR

Funny - I was on a run following Toby to the Ace one night - that's what made me decide too

BTW - did you go to the Sunday Service? I saw you were down for it but didn't see you there.

Hi Paul,

I was indeed down for it...and was all ready to go, but my wife had other plans relating to chinese new year. Hence I was "not allowed" to go to the sunday service. Didn't post to cancel on the board as I remained hopeful I might still go...but it wasn't to be. How was it?

A great run down with some excellent cars. A bit of tyre kicking (okay for half an hour) - notable cars were a lovely black Pantera and an F40 plus an awesome drive home

PS - should have got a take away

Sounds great ...I'm very jealous. I was looking at my watch trying to guess which bits of the route you guys would be at different times. I really can't miss the next big one to Paris. Can't wait!

To get back on topic.

Thanks guys for the replies. Thinking back It might well have been the front turbo, can't really remember for sure. The cooling down period after a run is mandatory, something I do as standard as I drive a Mitsi GTO TT at the moment.

There've been a couple of GTO owners looking at Noble's recently. I'm an ex-3000GT man and can honestly say that the two cars are like chalk and cheese. The 3000GT is terribly underrated but it made me very lazy (with all the gizzmos to keep me in a straight line). It was an eye opener for sure to get in the M12, but it's well worth it!
