Went out last night, heater wouldn't work and within 5 miles started overheating. Slowed down, cut short the journey (cold night to go running anyway) and let it cool down outside the Royal Oak while I checked my fluid levels. Hadn't got a screwdriver to get inside (needs a Pozi but the key ring has a slot head!) so crawled home but when temp started rising again, abandoned ship at a mate's farm.
Went back today, put in approx 3 litres of coolant, all hunky dory.
However, when I put the heater on , seems to be very humid air from the vents. Noticed this some while ago but put it down to the u/s air con which I resolved to sort B4 I really needed it on my first visit to Le Mans this year.
I'm sure the heater is no different from any other car but is it a heated water/air heat exchanger or exhaust gases/air heat exchanger? If it is water/air could that be where coolant is leaking i.e. into the heated air?
Please reply in a basic technical manner - if it's a central heating problem or advice on a new installation then I'm your man but my vehicle knowledge extends to changing the plugs, oil and filter on my minis 30 years ago.

Hands up guilty as proven above, should check oil, water, tyres etc more frequently
Really finally; she's a 52 plate GTO3 and passed her annual MOT a couple of weeks ago.
Tried to get one of those fancy new tri-annual test certificates but old Roly knew nothing about them so he's going to contact Rob - obviously something that hasn't caught on amongst us oldsters Oop North.

Sounds like the heater matrix, check for wetness in the front footwells (if so the fluid will smell sweet).

Yep - if you're losing coolant and saturated air is coming out of the heater vents, does sound as if heater matrix is gone. If it was just your rad leaking, you wouldn't get moisture in the cabin. HM is a bit of a bar steward to get to, I'm told.
I had the same thing. There should be a pipe on the side of the heater box that drains water down onto the road. Mine didn't have either a pipe or the flange for the pipe to sit on. Everytime I went out in the car my left leg got wet through

I had no water ingress anywhere, I thought I had smoke coming out of the left vent on the dashboard that feeds air to the windscreen. I also panicked as my first thoughts were an electrical problem, had visions of the car bursting into flames. As posted it was not smoke, Noble said it was steam from the heater, that is why I am having to have it replaced. If I had known it was steam not electrical I would have driven the car to Noble instead of having them collect it. I must admit I thought 15 hours labour sounded heavy but presumed Noble must know.

Thanks for those last few posts. It's all falling into place now unfortunately. Wondered where the leak was coming from that was soaking the carpet at the side of the drivers seat. Sounds like a major job - is the heater a Noble special? Anyone tried stripping the dash out?
Alot of people get wet patches on the floor to the right of the drivers seat and yet not at the back or the front. This has been put down to rivets missing on the floor pan and water getting up into the carpet. (This is of couse if you have driven it in the wet).
My point is don't assume that wet bit is a result of what problem you may be having.

15 HOURS! Are they using tools or tweezers and tooth picks ?
Hi Terry, met you and your daughter at the pub/Travel Lodge before Silverstone a bit ago. What symptoms did you have of the failed heater? Can't see it's anything else with all the very damp air coming through the heater vents and yes I do try and drive come rain or shine.
Worty, how much of a specialist was your local garage to consider tackling the job? I've had mine serviced locally at a specialist company who prepare 60's, 70's & 80's classic Formula 1 cars so they don't have problems with tackling the mechanical side but wonder about removing the dash, etc.

Nice to hear from you again, the only thing I saw was what appeared to be smoke coming out of the left heater vent by the screen, thinking about it now though there were times when I wondered why the inside of the glass area had some misting on it when I parked and came back to it even on a warm day.
