OK, was on the motorway last week and was certain i could feel a high speed instability. Same feeling when you get pushed sideways by a crosswind. Only subtle, but needed steering wheel correction each time.

Today same thing. Almost feels like rear wheel steering. Very un-nerving.

And twice today at 90-100, i've had a whirring sound with a sort of bump-bump-bump noise from the rear end. As i slowed (as you would) the bump-bump-bump slowed too, so it is wheel speed related.

At other times today the car was fast, smooth and as it always has been.

The car has FSH and had two new tyres 3 or 4 weeks ago. Pressures correct.

Can't see anything obviuosly wrong, but it they are worrying symtoms.

I had this on a trackday a few weeks back. I too had just had new tyres fitted by my local chaps.

Borrowed a torque wrench to check all the wheel nuts and found 3 sets to be between 80-90 nm, so I tightened them up to 110 nm, and to my horror, the rear o/s wheel was only slightly more than finger tight! eek

Couldn't believe it.

Sorted the problem though.

I suggest you get yr self a 150 nm (210 ftlb) wrench asap if you don't already have one.

Good luck.

i reckon its a wheel bearing - jack it up and twist the wheels from side to side

not a difficult job to do

Thanks. So how tight should hub nut be?

www.gto3.com/components/wheels.htm#torque

270Nm

You'll need a vertible torque wrench o' doom to do them up that tight. Or you could use a hefty socket wrench and breaker bar, and just stand on it the right distance from the end to apply the correct amount of torque. eg. a 75kg person would have to stand 0.3673m from the fulcrum to apply 270Nm (270Nm / 9.8 N/kg / 75kg) scratchchin read headache

And how would one measure the 0.0073 centimeters? I guess it'd be best not to be wearing your Doctor Martins!! hehe

Hi Peter - how's it all going? (apart from the wheelnut / bearing issues you sound like you're having obviously!). It's Shaun here - from the Hoon.

Is it a 2.5 with std diff, because when my diff went thats exactly what was happening to me on the A3. Sudenly feeling like the car was pushing into the next lane.

Bet its a loose Hub Nut (drive shaft nut)
You should start to experience intermittent longer brake travel as well!
This a a f'ckin dangerous issue with these cars that should have been sorted by the factory the moment it was recognised. rolleyes

I was going to say the same thing, Can't see what you drive from your profile!! I had it under acceleration as the diff wrongly transfered power to one wheel hence pushing you sideways!!

All hub nuts should now have paint on them to show if they do move, and every service is meant to have them checked and replaced if they have moved.

If the car has been recently serviced and they aren't marked / weren't checked, then you should take that up with the service agent.

Well not as much time as i hoped for today, but have got both wheels jacked up and can't get any play to be apparent in either wheel bearing assembly. And both axles turn smoothly.

So tomorrow it'll be hub nuts checking time.

Car was last serviced 4K ago at the factory so i should find paint on the nuts?

Hmmm, thoughts of diff needing replacing....... Ouch! Any way of confirming the diff or just a process of elimination? Seems a lot of work to get it out to find it's OK..

I know that hub nuts work loose but I can't get my brain round as to why. As far as the threads stretching goes it simply means the nut material is too soft. It's easy and cheap to manufacture nuts in a higher tensile strength steel. The limit has to be same hardness/strength of the drive shaft itself but you obviously don't want to stretch that. Poor response factory to a possible serious defect.Good job there is a perported solution in the form of a Porche part.(somewhere in hub nuts history)
