I've been working hard to produce a stronger gearbox for the M12 and am pleased to announce its now available.

The box uses a Brand New M12 6 speed gearbox, fitted with stronger bearings and a Brand new Quaife ATB

The Gearset is Hardened, shotpeened, polished and super finished.

This gearset finishing process has been perfected on another gearbox project I have been involved in

The box is also modified to take an oil cooler which is essential to protect the gears, bearings and fork selector.

I can not tell you exactly how much HP/Torque this gearbox will take but I can tell you there has never been a failure of the other type of gearbox that has been developed.

the price is £3000 all in - but does not include the oil pump or cooler

I'm working on an oil cooler that will fit in the side air vents neatly

I have also been asked if I can produce a box with a different set of ratio's - this is possible however i will need probably 20 - 30 orders to make it cost effective

Hope this helps

When will you know how much torque it can take?

We expect the box to take over 700 bhp - however until one breaks we will never know the max load it can take

Dont care about power it's pretty Irrelevant, the problem is torque!

Ciao Gadgeroonie!
As soon as you can have an idea of the maximum torque it can resist let us know.
My car has a very strong engine by roush but we had to limit the torque on the old gearbox, even on mine we've fitted oil pump and cooler and after a lot of track days all seems to be fine at the moment.
Did you change the metal kind of the gearset?
Thank you for replying ciao

Marcello.

A clutch that'll take 500ft/lbs would be handy too.

To be honest, without someone having the standard 6 speed fail, and have it in bits to find exactly why, we're just as much in the dark. Everyone goes on about torque related failures, but who's actually had one? I believe a couple of 5th gears have been lost in racing, but that's racing for you! Big jump over the curbs with your foot planted can cause the strongest things to break.

I'm not trying to rubbish your efforts Mike, as we need people like you pushing this forward, but the question is, are we trying to fix a problem that doesn't actually exist? I don't know, and as ever, happy to be corrected.

Hi Phil

yes - I think the Gearbox in the Noble is probably a lot stronger than we realise

however if you speak to some of the Noble service centres the failures are probably more common than you might think

lots of the owners in the USA have been pushing the power and there are quite a few reports of gearbox failures there too

I have a clutch lined up for the box also

In fact quite a few have gone, most commonly 5th gear. What Mike's doing is a definite advance, I'd like dog engagement next.

Well done mate, I just wish he'd do re-furbs as well as selling whole new boxes.

Paul,

Have you actually seen one of these failed gearboxes? Any pics? I´m interested too, to know exactly what breaks. If it´s stripping 5th gear, then something is obviously wrong with the gear as first and second have the highest stresses on the teeth. Bearings? do they fail first and cause reduced meshing on the gear?

Otherwise all we have is hearsay, and another urban myth gets stronger....

Trevor - you are correct

most teeth failures are on 5th

and as the bearings fail the gears get sloppy and loose thier meshing capability - which in turn causes a failure

it seems its the bearings which are the weak link - causing a tooth failure

Are the stronger bearings therefore available separatly for people like Paul to get a rebuild done?

the problem with a rebuild when the the bearings have gone is that the gearset will have been damaged - you may not be able to see the damage by eye - but there is a good chance the gearset will fail in the future due to this

so the only thing you would end up rescuing from the box is the casing

Noble will only sell new boxes - not parts - so it is not possible or economical to repair a damaged box

Hope this helps

Will Ford sell you parts though?

no - you have to buy the gearboxes from Noble

the mondeo box has different ratio's from what I am led to believe - and again you have to buy a complete box from fords
