Roush exhaust at Donington - noise warning!!
Discussion
Well, I lasted 15 minutes at Donington today. I was short shifting, carrying a high gear round most of the circuit, (sighting session you see), not really using full throttle and still recorded 103.1dB at the old hairpin!!
99.5dB was the lowest number they had for me anywhere on the circuit. I can't stress enough that I was really mincing along at this stage too. Gawd knows what it would've been at full chat at 7,000rpm!
This is way loud!! The chap said "it'll take more than a set of silenced tail pipes to get that below 98dB" so, I came home.
So, "noisy" trackdays only for me from now on.

Unless things have changed recently I thought the only actual noise meter location at donington was near the entry to the pit lane at the start of the pit straight. Generally if you back off their your o.k for the rest of the circuit.
Maybe they've added some more noise meters in recent months but I know in the past they would imply you were being monitored all around the circuit but in actual fact you weren't.

Nope -always had one down towards old hairpin afaik. But it's the one on the pit lane wall that usually trips first...
Very concerned to hear Washy's figures. I seem to recall a static of 99bBA at 4.5K revs on Ash's car which should translate to being OK on drive-by at Donington. Clearly not the case.

They have a mobile unit now too. I blew them all!! No escaping the noise police at Donny anymore. Apparently the local council even have measuring gear in the surrounding villages too!!

I'm not wanting to sound uncaring, but didn't the residents know that Donington was there before they moved in?
This noise police thing is beginning to do my head in.
It's a hoot isn't it! I guess the trackday phenomenon has turned these places into noise generators many more days than was the case with just racing and testing?
What really gets me is Donny is in the flight path for East Midlands airport!!
I can understand it to a degree even though I am a TD lover.
My mate lives in Surrey and there has been a little track near him for years, but recently they have started doing stock car racing, and its on all the time. I spent last weekend down there and after 3 days in the garden the constant drone and tyre squeeling was begining to do my head in.
A tricky topc I guess.

10 years ago no track days. Now too many to choose from. True it was allways there but to be honest to them it wasn't used as much. I think that's the basic problem.
The Rousch exhaust seemed to have everything going for it, this is I hope a minor blot. Trevor any ideas? An exhaust thats only allowed into noisy only days will be a bit of a limiter.

Definitely working on it! A few simple options will be tried out at Donington in about 10 days. Objective - minimal restiction with drive-by <98dB. If we achieve this -then the exhaust system will be good for every track in the UK.
Cheers
Rob
I haven't witnessed it myself yet but I just spoke to the guy who's fitted the cats on to my car this morning and the first thing he said was it's a lot quieter at idle. Even his colleague across the workshop apparently commented how much difference it had made. I'll try it out tomorrow but fingers crossed!!

Rob, let me know asap please.
Well, had a little ride out this morning to meet robp. I can say without a doubt that it is a lot quieter with the cats in. Idle is a little quieter but the real difference is under load. Way quieter. The only other observation is the note has also got a little deeper.
Having experienced both I can't think of one good reason to run the car without cats. I assumed it would affect power but rob and joust have shown that not to be the case.

Anyone lend me some dosh for the fine?
Right, whip round for Ash then - I believe all we need is £5K.
Ash - we're hoping that cats in place will be enough to keep us from getting BF'd at Donington. Trevor recorded me at 97.7dBA drive-by (10m)at 5500rpm in 3rd simulating coming out of the Esses onto the pit straight which would be fine (just). Looking at the power and torque curves there really is little advantage in hanging on much beyond 6K rpm. However just to see, Trevor moved up about 30m where I was changing into 4th on the limiter and here we recorded 101.8 peak.
I'll be taking along some 'silenced' tail-pipes with a rolled lip at the end (rather than the megaphone jobs we have on at the mo). I'm convinced that will be all we need , but just in case we also have some baffles which can be inserted into the exhaust (before the final tail-pipe) which should turn it into a stealth vehicle. Downside is that you'll increase back pressure and lose some power.
Lets hope for a dry day next Friday so I can really get some power down and give the exhaust a good testing.
I'll keep y'all posted.

Ash -we were just about there, but the bloody ink started to run as the notes were drying (and 'pounds' was spelled incorrectly).
So, it's back to just a couple of moths, so far. However I'm expecting much drunken generosity following Englands heroic win over..whoever it was they were playing with.
