does anyone know the size (ie 5 inches) of the speakers as im going to upgrade them for a better sound and if possible any ideas on make / model

You can't go that wrong than change them for a SPS-170A from Alpine. £45 or so and it makes a massive difference.

Focal 3 ways, just had mine installed and they are superb, about £100 if I recall.

Are they just a direct swop that any idiot can do? Or will it require cutting, sticking, soldering and an electronics degree...? Thx

4 screws and the pullling off of two spade connectors and sticking them back on per side.

Blimey -I think even I might be able to manage that!
Current Sony speakers are wonderful - great aural tone, full range, crystal clear blah blah..and then you turn on the engine and can hear sod all!

How do you get the covers off again - that's without damaging the trim (mine are on solid)?

You need to pull out the mesh, either with a pin type thing or a knife at the ende, the mesh if fitted into a slot round the edge of the base plate.

Very easy to swop over.

I fitted an infinity 3 way speaker that sounds a lot better, but remember that you are never going to get it to sound very good in a GRP door with little insulation or space and only 1 speaker each side.

The OEM units are poor though, as are sony head units. (they sound very tinny, the way Japaneese like it I guess)

Greg, so maybe this is where I've been going wrong! You say extract just the mesh and not the Black plastic bezel (In the past I've tried levering off the bezel!)?

I'm with you on that one Ash...in 18 months of ownership the radio has been on maybe 10 times...all when the car is stationary.
