went out last night, battery was dead as had not been used for ages, ran for a while very roughly, turned it off whilst on a hill so if the battery hadn't charged enough i could bump start, turned ignition back on…..very dead. put jump leads on……very dead…..still

Battery sounds like it's shot. Replace and carry on.

If you left the battery without a charger/monitor then its dead.
When a starter battery gets much below 9volts, its recovery is unlikely, particularly if its old. that's why leisure batteries are designed differently to be drained and recharged, car batteries are supposed to stay at 12+volts all the time.

Anyway, I suspect a new battery will solve your problem. The second time was possibly the immobiliser not liking the voltage/battery too.

You'll be amazed what issues a faulty battery can cause, I used to have a car that when the battery started playing up, it would switch on the radiator fan and leave it on while parked !

So true. When I had a big issue with the TRs battery recently (will post separately as I lived to tell the tale - just!) he had a serious strop (door locks, alarm, lights all doing strange things) which eventually and luckily settled down.

The battery is only a year old and the car was running a couple of weeks ago but not for long enough to fully charge the battery, its not a car that gets put away for the winter so has been running on and off all winter and surely if I put jump leads on it then there would be some life

When my battery was totally shot the car couldn't be jumped with starter leads.

It is highly likely you have developed a battery drain over time, I know my car did. I had to go through and redo entire parts of my loom to eliminate it.

Well, got the car back from Skip at Bespoke lsat week, the rear of the wiring loom had seen enough of life and decided enough was enough, wires replaced and car is running great again

Thanks Skip
