Rear light clusters
Discussion
Good afternoon team….In my quest to develop some new rear lights for my 3R, I need to purchase a couple of old Mondeo units. However, I am having a bit of trouble locating a pair – tried ebay etc…they are either sold or broken or…..something !! Would anybody have a pair that I could purchase? Not worried about scratches etc. as long as they are fundamentally in one bit.
Many thanks

I bought a set last year that I plan to do the very same thing.
Have you seen there is one on ebay, I know its only one side, but might be worth snapping up?

If i were you, I would put a request on to find-a-part or a similar service for a used mondeo saloon Mk1. You will get a few breakers emailing you within 24 hours with a pair.
Ive used it before, never let me down.
The lack of adverts is mainly down to breakers not thinking they have much value. Why make an advert for a £10 light cluster.
I bet it will work

like other i have a spare pair with intention of doing exactly the same... if someone moves it beyond and intention and makes a the clear plastic cover I will be interested in a pair.
don't really want the back as Im planning to do something different in LED's... but its low priority for me atm

Gentlemen - thanks for your input. I was going to place an add on find-a-part but if either of you that have a pair, want to sell them on, I would be very interested. As I mentioned earlier in the year, I really wanted to do something with the rear units but have plans for the other light units as well. Being in the car design business, I do get access to interesting components. The rears are going to be LED 'light Pipe' type outer rings...so no LED points of light as such. However, they wont have clear covers simply down to the time & cost of making an acceptable optical quality tool for the thermoformed, or better still, drape formed covers.
Thank you
Marco
Thank you

Are you saying you will use the lenses as they are? how will you gain access to the rear?
The rear compartments for the OEM bulbs are plastic welded across the seams to the lense.
Also the dimples on the rear of the foglight are different to the amber / brake areas so a light bar across the width of the lense will look slightly different as it passes through the fog light bit
Really want these to work but i got so far into retrofitting mine and sacked it off.
Hope you can get further

The construction of the existing units is fairly old fashioned (they were designed in the 80's) although the inner & outer moulding are vibration welded together. I only want the units to give me an A surface to work with. I will use clay (as per the OEM studios) to work up the changes after recessing the LED driver units into the existing lamps. Then I will take a GRP splash off the mock-ups & make the final panels. However, I have still yet to find a pair of old units.

Best of luck with this, many have tried (including myself) but so far no one has been successful. I still believe a direct replacement is the correct way due to the fact that the car can be put back to standard if ever required. Marco
I for one would be happy to put my name down for a set if you were looking to do a run once you have some design info. My guys were going to do the clay form and we needed ten sets to make it viable. this was some years ago but I bet getting ten would not be impossible providing the cost is sensible. Look forward to following your progress!!
A set of rear lights similar to the above, would look great. Unfortunately, to get these types of modern optic shapes takes very complex injection mouldings & thus tooling. A set of OEM LED rear light clusters will take a couple of years to engineer & tool from styling release....& there is the styling support & feasibility for a year before that. The engineering bill might be a million pounds & the tooling another half million..... that's not including testing & homologation. I am going to try to do something as fancy as I can for about £200. !!!!!!!!!!!! Watch this space early next year !!
