Steering rack?

Hi guys, an opinion or two from the all knowing collective please. I've got a 'clacking' noise over even small bumps, sounds like it is just above my feet, I have a small amount of play in the steering, very small really but it does make the same small 'clacking' noise rocking the wheel, checked the top ball joints, they seem spot on, the steering knuckle looks good too, the play seems to go into the rack. I can grab the steering arms and pulling them up and down replicates the noise too at the rack end, I don't seem to be able to push / pull them at all though. Does this sound like some play in the rack or should I be looking somewhere else. The strange thing is there was no noise until I took it to get the GEO set up after fitting the new Protechs, I know the locknut on one balljoint was seriously tight before though.

You sure the rack is tight on the frame?

Pretty sure - I had the floor off and checked, all seems tight....
