Hi All

Im planning on re-doing my floor this winter as Im not happy with how I did it before.

Im wondering if there is another way to seal the floor, other than RTV sealant. Obviously this is preparing the chassis and treating it as normal.

My idea is to use neoprene sheets (wet suit material) and bond this to the chassis rails. The Alloy floor is then rivoted/self tapped to the chassis as normal. The joins between the neoprene strips along the chassis will have sealant on top.

My thinking is that it is the electrolysis between alloy and steel that caused the rivots to degrade. Having this material between will be a barrier for this. Plus it is a barrier to water too. RTV loses its effectiveness, splits etc, so this might stop that.

I may be talking out of my arse, but its a idea - would it work?

Yes it would work very well, have you considered stainless steel pop rivets?

Bit of a pig if you need to drill them out.

I used as have many. 1" wide adhesive neoprene strips. But I used screws not rivets to put floor back on.

Excellent good to hear. Bondy was it Neoprene tape you used? if so was it sticky both sides or just on the chassis side?

I was going to use self tapping hex screws, as you get more purchase than screws and easier to remove in the future.

I used a neoprene strip the same width as the chassis rails and also some sikoflex in certain places, been brilliant for the last 4 years

Suggest you Duralac the rivet/screw this stops the electrolytic corrosion used for ally panels on steel aircraft frames about £10 a tin from Elise parts

I used the Hex screws but they do sheer easily. My tape was sticky one side and that went on the fool panels but it doesn't matter which way round you do it.

If you put a layer of neoprene in between metal you may increase the effect of crevice corrosion. The holes/pores in the neoprene would then provide a place for water to be held?

Would you not be better to use rubber strips and seal the edges off to stop crevice corrosion?

fair point jed. I suppose it needs to be something with a bit of give in it so it can compress/expand with the alloy floor as it is a tad uneven.
