I've been thinking about this for some time of making a dash pod gauge.

So something like TUX has done but in a 3 gauge pod.

Something like this

It would be nice if it could mimic the curve and shape of the oil temp/fuel gauge in the main cluster, maybe off set it towards the driver slightly.
What do we think?

As it's a small part I was thinking I could do the project when I'm away in Tanzaina.
I've never done anything like this before, so any advice?

How do I get the curve of the dash right and what should I make a mold out of, I'm not sure I'm arty enough to do it in clay.

I've just been watching some youtube videos about mold making.
Cock it's a lot of work.
How many hundreds of hours did you put into making you car Andy, wow.

So it might to easyer to start with an off the shelf part mod it to fit and take some molds from that.

How about this?

My half-knowlege version with some make it up as I go along:
Cling film on dash,
Spread body filler over it and let set
Cut bits of wood block about the right shape with clock holes bored
Bond this on with more filer
Add more filler / paper to fill voids and add volume

remove

Sand to the shape you want

Polish

take a mold from it (or give it to a company who will mold for you).

OR
Draw in solid works and have a 3d print done. You could approximate the dash shape and then sand the model to final fit.

Again, you then take the mold from this.

OR
Your plan to modify might be simplest. Maybe use the clingfilm on the dash to take a mold of the shape (filler, or glassfibre). Cut the bottom out of the off the shelf part. Bond the 2 together while in place on dash then fill-sand-polish and take mold (or carbon wrap/dip it?)

You could always ping Jed a message (JW027) - hes a product designer and has a lovely 3D printer.

He might be able to offer some tips?

Masking tape usually helps because you can build straight off of it without damaging the dash.

Gauges over load smile

I've ordered a standard gauge from the internet, hopefuly I'll be able to get a mold of the dash and bring it back out to Tanzania to mock something up in November.

Its a touch screen, that can be set to show one gauge at a time, if thats what you want, what you can see is just a few, that is important for my car, It can displays 30 diff gauges up to 7 at a time, you config how you want it at a touch of the screen
