Dissapointing service :(

Went the other day to have my car mapped by a well respected mapper on here the other day and just thought I would comment on the service provided.Got to the location in plenty of time and killed a bit of time till the mapper turned up at the time we agreed.He introduced himself seemed a nice fellow then he dissapeared into the RR place.Me and my mate were hanging around outside for an hour like a couple of lemons while some car was being run on the rollers inside.
Now this is my argument not once in this time did the chap come out to say look boys things are a little behind it will be x time before we get you on or anything of the like (yes some of you may argue why did I not approach him to see what was going on but I am the customer he is the host so it is up to him to keep me in the loop).It certainly left a sour taste in my mouth so we just got in the car and left.
I received an e mail at ten to eight which is neraly 2 hours behind schedule saying the rollers are ready just not good enough to my mind.When I e mailed him back he said this was a hobby for him hobbists are usually enthusiasts but he did not really accomodate us in my opinion.Considering he was charging £500 for the (priviledge) in my conclussion I thought his overall attitude was quite rude.

Why on earth didn't you do this privately?I'm sure there was a bloody good reason, friend got delayed a couple of weeks ago but he didn't come on here bleating.Things get delayed, it's not the end of the world. Being in Arnhem at the moment for the remembrance of Operation Market Garden kinda puts things in perspective .

Actually I was not bleating I was just expressing my experience is this not what the forum is about if I had a good experience I would have been straight on here singing the praise of the mapper.There seems to be a pattern of there mapping sessions behind im not questioning the results all you guys have had with your cars but a little communication goes a long way.I drove for 2 hours to get to the session and the decent thing would have been for him to give me a heads up on any delays etc.I did do this privately to air my unhapiness with the service and his attitude was we will agree to disagree on this one Chris that is why I have given my opinion on here.
there is another side to the coin... the guy before you was probably very pleased that mapper took whatever time was needed to get the job done correctly.
I agree that some communication as to the expected delay would probably prevented any bad feeling- or perhaps a blanket stement when you book to say 'the session before may run on, so yours may be x hours late'.
Mine will be going there once I've done a couple more things, and I'll just factor in the extra few hours it may take.

i think that's the point that Chris is trying to make.all the above seem to have had issues regarding time spent "WAITING" out of interest how many of the above guys were informed about any delays that may occur when the arrived for their mapping session.im with Chris on this one, as the customer has no idea if and how long any delay there may be, whereas Trevor would be the one who knows exactly (SORRY) has a pretty good idea about how long any delays that there may be, and at least tell the customer so they are aware.I agree that some communication as to the expected delay would probably prevented any bad feeling- or perhaps a blanket statement when you book to say 'the session before may run on, so yours may be x hours late'.

just a small bit of information goes a long way. if the mapper knows that the rolling road he uses always has delays, then do one of two things ,enlighten the customer, when they book an appointment or on arrival,or maybe look at using somewhere else to do the dyno work...... just my opinion.

I think if you read what Chris said, the mapper said that it was down to Chris to go into the dyno area,interrupt the mapping and dyno of the other car to find out what the delay was, and how long it would be before they would be finished. that was the mappers opinion of the situation, but Chris was stating as a "customer it should be the onus of the mapper to inform him as he didnt want to interrupt the dyno guys whom he hadnt even met or been introduced to. That was where they apparently agreed to disagree. i guess even then,an apology down to miscommunication would have i believe, avoided chris coming on the forum to express his unhappiness. It actually shows how many people have been kept waiting, and maybe the mapper should address those issues, so that no one else is disappointed with the "whole service", not just having to grin and bear the lengthy delays because they so desperately want their cars mapped.
We all praise good work, so we are entitled to air our views on bad experiences!!!!
Problem is with dyno work, is that you really cant say how long a dyno session is going to take.
Might be problems with.
fuel pressure
boost leaks
dodgy senser readings
vacuum leaks
ect
mapper might have to get car working and running properly even before he starts
to start to look at fuel and ignition maps and in our case boost maps as well.
Believe me, the amount of programmable screens and maps on a modern ecu is staggering and if mapper
is unhappy with the running of the car all these will have to be checked.
A good dyno mapper will check all tables to make sure that your pride n joy is not deting, running lean
with good fuel pressure on full power.
To say that a car is gonna take one hour three hours or all night is in my opinion very naïve.
Saying that, I do feel that if rolling road guys gave a bit of leeway in time between sessions it would help.
I have been to said rolling road and yes they were running a bit late but had a word with mapper,decided to go for a pub evening meal to kill a bit of time.
Then spent the next 3 hour watching my car being hammered on the dyno, asked loads of questions when I could hear myself think, and overall had a really good night.
Came away happy and learnt a bit more about my car.

Just a tiny little, tiddly bit of advice. Dont Fk them off as u will have nowhere to go for ur mapping. :-)

There is a monopoly on mapping our cars as the codes to upload to the MBE are only available to a very select few, if you struggle to communicate with the mapper you are left with not getting the car mapped... Communications was an issue I had and so I changed to a different ECU and have used different tuners.
Given this thread I suspect you may have issues getting the car mapped again... Regardless of how fair you think it is, it's just a side line to the mapper it's not unreasonable for him to pick and choose who he 'helps'.
I suspect if the codes were more widely available things would be very different.

Chris, as Andy says the codes are the issue but there are alternatives such as trip up the M1 to Noble Motorsport who are first class, not sure but l think Ray West at Thruxton & there are others who have the codes.
As a thought for anyone running the Mbe Ecu that is now obsolete you can easily convert to another make (Omex being one) & have your car tuned by any recognised engine mapper.

While I agree there are other options anybody with a std Noble will be hard pressed to find somebody with more skill and experience than the mapper involved !!! Unfortunately the RR involved are normaly always running late and do not seem to worry about it so as with many things you pays yer money and makes your choice !!
