I had a remap to my 3r with yellowshed a couple of months ago . Only a small increase in power to 383bhp and 403 lb/ft torque . I was wondering if anybody has had any gearbox or clutch problems ( both standard ) with this level of torque ? I am just wondering how safe it is ?
The car is only used on road at the moment .

Cheers for any comments.

if its got an LSD you will be fine regardless of box... if something fails then in truth it was probably on its way out.

a non LSD diff will almost certainly fail at this power if used hard, so be very careful as its marginal on a standard 3L power... fine on standard 2.5L power tho smile

I had my standard 5 speed box (on stock 3L power) health checked before I upgraded to similar power to you have and the open diff was literally about to let go

its not a precise figure, Id not run over 430ftlb on stock clutch, but some have run well over 450ftlb.

But in truth, once you start to go over 450bhp you really want to do a load of other modifications to make it reliable and clutch is only one of them, and these mods done properly will mean you can go well over 500bhp hence most cars are either around 400bhp or solid 500bhp plus IMO.

yes 6 speed & lsd. Car had been sat in the garage for 6 weeks, took it out for a drive and was really rough/hesitant through 5th gear, wasn't being driven hard, and not a spectacular failure but Jetstream diagnosed as gearbox on its way out.

Car is used on track fairly often tho.

Did you have any problems with the clutch at these levels ?

Nope, tho the clutch was upgraded while the box was out, due to going up to 500bhp

the price can vary, it depends on the state of your donor box etc.

I'm just going through this now after my standard box let go. I was running about 420bhp with about the same torque. I've upgraded the clutch and gone for the strengthened gear box c/w oil cooler and lightened fly wheel (thanks Andy). I will try to update once the car is back on the road with the costs. Reasons for doing this? Reliability, and looking to take the car to a "safe" 500bhp ish.

Engine has had all that work to take it to where it is now. It will need upgraded injectors and another remap. Not going to bother with high and low boost.

Mondeo low mileage gearbox approx £200
Gearbox strengthening work approx £1300
Labour for engine out and refitted £1000

Then you have the gearbox cooling, plus the clutch price to add to that. Prices may be slightly different, just trying to remember as I did all this a year ago

What Mondeo box is it?
Where can I find out more about the upgrades?

I might buy a one and upgrade it, then I can swap my one out as I want an oil cooler fitted.

JP, for your car its simply an ST220 box, the main upgrade is oil cooling and steel cage bearings (rather than stock plastic)... the gearbox mad also shot peans and polishes the gears and whilst I had mine done Im not really sure this makes much difference.... IMO its the oils cooling that helps the box take more power.

The issue with your idea is that you must have a quaife diff fitted and this wasn't fitted to the mondeo and is and extra £700 so you need to fit the diff from your box.
