I love the sunny shine, its fantastic.

But i've just popped out for lunch in my [black] car, and with the A/C on full blast its just too damn hot!

Would a top up of refrigerant or something improve the cooling of the air conditioning? It comes out pretty cold as it is, but it just can't disipate the heat.

I remember someone was upgrading fans, or resistors or something to improve things, anything come of this?

I have the tunnel cooling mod BTW.

First step would be a check of the refrigerant and a recharge if needed. There's a dye in the fluid and it's used to check for leaks so have someone check your pipework for leaks too. The stock a/c works perfectly and shouldn't need any form of upgrading IMHO.

I find that if its parked in the garage over night and then i drive with the A/C on its bearable.
But park up for any length of time the heat builds and does not go, like i say the air comes out of the vents pretty cold, but it sounds like it could be cooler with more refridgerant.

unfortunately the car doesn't have a filter for the air going into the fan thus the evaporator gets blocked and the fan blows against the blockage and thus you get very little air flow in the car... the only real solution is going to be to remove your fan under the front clam and clean the evaporate as best you can without damaging it.

Ive changed my setup and could dry my hair in the stream of air that comes out of the vents now smile... and I'm currently still using the stock heater fan as its actually pretty powerful (incidentally it looks like a land rover one smile )

here is a pic of my evaporator... ALL the air from the fan must go through this.

Agree with streetdragster, once you've parked and made the car like a sauna inside, it's near impossible to get it cool again.

Does everyone use just the setting for the two vents in the dash either side? Or is there a more efficient setting on the dial that works more vents and thereby gets more cold air in?

worth mentioning that no amount of adjustment will get the air to come out of vents as per the dial, the air box simply has a flap, when pointing at the feet it goes to the feet only... but the screen position goes everywhere including vents and floor!... vent position closes the floor but goes to vents and screen equally... you can of cause close the vents themselves smile

I have to say, I was only thinking the other day how well my air-con still copes for a low volume car.Even when it's been sat in the heat,(and with an all black interior) if you open the windows to let heat out while the air con is working towards a cold temp, within a couple of minutes you can close the windows and have cold air on your face. Obviously not with a mainstream manufacturer efficiency, but perfectly usable.

Thanks Andy.

On a scale of 1 - 10, ten being pulling the engine, how hard is it to get to the evaporator to clean it?
I've not done any work up the front end of the car, so i have no idea whats under there.

I what way have you changed your setup?

On wednesday i'm getting the refridgerant levels checked anyway and topped up if needed, at least then i'll know that side of things is tip top.

5... its an all day job and you will have to clean the evaporator in place, removing the bolts will be a 2 man job unless you have Mr Tickles arms.... Ive changed mine radically by binning all the noble stuff under the dash and making my own from scratch along with using different evaporator and heater matrix to suit my design... designing and making the heater box was a harder/worse job than making the tub in my eyes so i wouldn't recommend copying lol.

here is a pic of my setup now with the fan removed... the white bit is a filter element (felt i had to have that given the condition of my evaporator) and on your car the evaporator will be here and thus you would have to try to clean it in that position... just be very careful smile

Id recommend using a mini steam cleaner with a soft paintbrush and go slowly.

If you do Tux could you take some photos or something so i have some sort of guide to follow, not very confident working on the front of the car at this point.

Hiya, this is something I was going to ask for help on too, more to get a feel as to whether what I have (old lady politely blowing slightly cold fairly smelly air) is normal or not... I started off by having it checked saturday, so old gas recovered, vacuum to clean out, new gas loaded. 400 grams recovered, 1000 grams refilled, I thought this would solve the problem, it is colder than fresh air but it still gets as hot as hades in the car. The compressor unit was new at Jetstream 2 years ago and looks clean, the bulkhead is hot enough to fry an egg on though. I'd not thought about muck on the coil, that does make sense, how do you access it to clean it? Once again, I have to say thanks for all the posts with help on here, it makes repairing / running these fun and bearable...

I must say that I'm getting quite pee'd off and a lot poorer chasing my aircon problem.
It seems that every part on my system has or had a leak.
Jetstream fixed new seal on the compressor. Still didn't hold charge.
Replaced the condenser as evidence of oil. Still didn't hold charge.
So now booked in next week for a new evaporator, more or less process of elimination, although he said he could see signs of leakage from dye near there.
We don't know yet whether it's a standard part, or special order from Noble. If the latter, we'll get one made.
Anyone know details for a replacement evaporator?

Due to my evaporator looking as it did I thought it prudent to replace while the dash was off.... It wasn't availed except as a complete heater unit at 850plus vat... Hence I made my own.

I do have my old one that holds a charge at home, maybe it's worth trying plumbing that in under the dash and seeing if it holds charge before you remove yours and spend a fortune?... Pipes are easy to get off and simply attach my oldie to it?

I had a feeling it cost something like that from Noble. With the replacement condenser my aircon specialist guy just measured up the original and got an aftermarket job in the correct dimensions. Expectation is that the evaporator shouldn't be difficult to match, or it can be made.

Many thanks Andy, for the offer of your unit for a test. I'll mention it and see whether he thinks that would be worthwhile.
My problem is that wherever the next leak is, it's really small as it takes 2 weeks to drop it's charge. It was nice a cool over the weekend! Last year it held it's charge all summer. LOL would be cheaper to just re-gas each time it loses charge (albeit illegal, 'coz of the kittens).

is it possible to get behind the evaporator and blow high pressure compressed air to clean it out?

Unfortunatley not without destroying something... and impossible to get at in place IMO.

There is a reasonable diagram in the manual page 15 of chapter 9 that shows what you have.
