Fuel pump ?

Went for drive, as it was so nice today, went over a bump, all of a sudden no power !

Now when I key-on, there is no buzz from the fuel pump !

Any advice ? Where to start looking ?

Where is the fuel pump fuse ?

Where is the fuel pump ?

How big a job to swop it ?

Any other advice, much appreciated

Hi Paul ,2 banks of relays on the bulkhead in front of the aircon unit , one of the relays is fuel pump , give them a good wiggle , sounds like it has come loose .

Those relays tend to be a pain. Here's a pic to help. Taking them out and twisting the connectors slightly with a long nose pliers can help (thanks Steve!)

Some cars are fitted with an impact switch that cuts the earth supply to fuel pump will also be in the same area

Remove the near side rear wheel arch cover(next to the fuel tank) and you will see the pump and filter.

More Help please.
When I key-on I get voltage at the pump for about 2 seconds.
I think that sounds about right (when measured across both pins of the pump.)
(normally a 2 second "buzz" at key-on.)

But I only get 6-7 volts ( and no buzz )
Also 6 - 7 Volts when cranking

So now I'm not sure if the pump IS dead ( and measured voltage is normal )
or
pump is ok and the voltage is too low ?

Any thoughts ?

Have you tried a tempory live to the pump had a similar problem had bad corrosion on some of the relays

Yep, I think that will be the next thing, stick a garenteed 12V on the pump and see what happens.
I need to get the wheel off so I can see what I'm doing properly, and for that I need a decent scissor jack, my day to day cars have naff cantilever jacks.

So, it is the pump, it's jammed, why is it jammed ? a flake of Alu jammed in the pumping element, why is it there because the fuel filter has partly collapsed !

The element that is in there is a nylon gauze with nylon "frame" when I google the sytec replacement filter I get images of a a paper or metal element. Anyone else had theirs in bits recently ?

With either type of filter there doesn't appear to be any seal be seal between the clean and dirty side, I short I don't like the design, anyone use anything different ?

I went with the metal one as the paper ones are known to have problems

My original one was full of metal flakes from the petrol tank, if you upgrade the pump then it's a bad filter to have in original position so you really need two, a course one pre pump and the original filter post pump.

Andy, why is that ?
Because the original filter is too restrictive on the suction side ?

Anyway I'm not upgrading power for now, so I won't be flowing more fuel.

The 044s hate sucking fuel unlike the stock pump, and you end up with a buzzy complaining pump with a good possibility it will loose performance. So whilst the stock filter can easily flow the fuel the 044 won't like pulling fuel through it. I don't have a filter between my swirl pot and 044s , it's actually just before the fuel rail instead and I have course sock filters in the tank.

Whatever you do don't not have a filter at all before the pump as my original was FULL of alloy shavings hence why the filter was so bad..., even washing it out 3 times didn't get rid of it all.

Yeah, cheers Andy, I think the right solution for me is the 8 micron paper element on the suction side with the standard pump, the local parts shop says they can get me a pump for £100, which doesn't sound too bad ? ?

Like a lot of people I have a stock pump on the shelf that came off my car, your welcome to have that for free... might even have a spare paper filter on the shelf as well (but the paper filter is under £10 anyhow)

tbh on stock power the stock pump is more than good enough, just do the wiring upgrade and check the fuel line between the tank and the filter as both a weak points and could have caused your failure.

you could run the stock pump feeding a 044 - commonly done this way in motorsport
