Nearly picked up a ban today

3 points and £60 for averaging 97.8mph over 4 miles up the M20 today. Out of character for me this, but so much spray from a ferry load of lorries, I just couldn't bear being behind them anymore. Got to the front and only needed wipers on delay...Then through the mist behind me emerged the blue lights! Feck!

Tux, my back wheels are a bit easier to control than yours! By the way, I say £60 fine because I asked what the likely fine will be, maybe when it arrives I could lay a brick!

I hope you're right! Has anyone been on a speed awareness day? I'm not sure if it saves you the fine or the points but I'm sure it'd be an interesting day out whatever.

Your lucky, I got caught on M5 years ago on mobile speed trap @ 98, got six points and I think £180 fine. This was about 15 years ago!!!

I have one pending but I hear it's 4 hours of the most patronising crap you'll ever hear. You sit through this drivel to avoid the points and fine although the course is dearer than the £60 you'd have paid in the first place.

Perhaps it depends on the circumstances? I was told I wasn't driving dangerously but simply going too fast, so maybe a bit of weaving around etc. would make a difference.

You won't be eligible for SAD - you have to be within 10mph or so over speed limit (or something similar). Also it's only open to you if you haven't been 'done' within the last 3-4 years. The course costs more than the fine plus a day of your time if you have to travel far for it, but it spares you the points and the official fine. The points aspect is quite a consideration if you have multiple cars - the 'offence' stays with you for 5 years for insurance purposes and even if the points only increases your insurance by a relatively small amount (and believe me, even 3 points WILL increase your premiums)taken over say 3 cars for 5 years it will certainly add up.
As for the course itself -I guess they do vary, but the one I went on last year was disappointing. Rather than use the time to genuinely try and improve road safety it was, as someone else pointed out, just a patronising and irrational rant at speed itself. What was really concerning though was the level of ignorance shown by the people on the course of some of the most basic aspects of the highway code. Made me want to go home on the train.

In my defence it was 0800 on a sunday morning and the road was dead, not that that makes it ok of course...

My son went on the course and said it was ok took a morning, however as he was caught nr Southampton where he is at college and lives in Glasgow so it was a pretty expensive day!! Think the course was about £80 however as he had already amased 3 points within 2 months of passing his test and this was only 6 months later he would have been banned and of had to re sit his test. Test isnt available north of the border.

This was back in the day when the Plod could install these mobile speed cameras where they liked, black spot or no black spot. This one was positioned behind a bridge stanchion about 3 miles from J30 on the south bound M5 so no black spot, just a place that was easy to get to from the road running above to collect the camera.

LOL..I thought it was worth a go! I looked at your profile as I didn't recognise your title and when you appear to have no name or occupation a light bulb appeared above my head. They were nice guys just doing their job, so I've no complaints.
