My car is keeping me really "entertained of late". Simply won't do a track day without a problem.
Split water hose on Saturday that then simply crumbled in my fingers when i tried to cut a bit off and refit.

Once fixed, I drove off and there was a noise like something rubbing at a point on every rotation of the driver's rear wheel.

Clam open, engine off (so it's not related to brakes or engine) and at the same point of each rotation there was a very strange grinding, more "creaking" noise from the driver's rear driveshaft area.

Never going above 4000rpm or 75mph i "limped" back to London. However, 15 mins into the journey, when slowing to a stop (revs and road noise means you can't hear it) the noise seemed to have stopped.
Mind you, i couldn't decide (but convinced there was) if there was a high pitched squeak at speed which was the noise at 'x' rpm rather than just rolling the car back and forth.

Back in my garage, rolled the car back and forth, engine off and clam open and the noise had gone entirely. It also didnt seem to cause the car any issues when driving, although i short-shifted and drove slowly.

Will try again when the car is cool, tonight maybe, to see if the issue is still there but it was a very strange noise I don't suspect just "disappears".
Wheel nuts were tight on both sides- i checked.
Really did think it was something "rubbing" to start with, it was that sort of grind/creak noise at a certain point on rotation, but with clam open it was obvious it wasn't near the wheel.

Praying it has solved itself....but any ideas welcome.

Thanks

Does sound like a drive shaft CV, if it is you probably wont be able to feel any play in the joint until it gets much worse. I had a Honda elise which did around 1.5K incorporating track days before it was identifiable!

Thanks Gadge, but definitely doesnt seem to be exhaust. If the car is stationary, you roll it forward you can actually stop it at the point it makes the noise and just roll it back and forth. Very odd as you can't see anything at all. Nothing vibrates, rattles simply this weird duh, duh, duh creaking noise with every wheel turn until you cant hear it over wind / road/ engine noise!
But it might have stopped....

If it was CV related, would it stop making the noise when hot / warm if it was this? Last night it seemed to have disappeared completely. Need to see if it has come back or not......

Can i ignore it? It won't suddenly go bang under acceleration will it?

I have a similar problem on mine just now. Im hoping its CV and not diff. It was there all the time last week but have been away for a few days and took her out last night but the knocking was gone for the first few miles. I can only hear it at very slow speed though, ie less that 20mph.

Ditto, i may be being paranoid about the squeaking noise at speed - that could simply be air whistling etc. Never driven for an hour with no stereo at low revs on a motorway, i think it definitely plays tricks on your hearing!

Mine is less than 20mph and even when stationary and engine off and you just roll the car forward until the point at which it "knocks". But it had stopped for last 1/2 hour of journey last night.

Well what do you know maybe there's something in the autumn air and our Nobles are catching it?

I had an identical (sounding) problem on my M400 at the back end of August and it transpired that it was a rear o/s wheel bearing (both rear bearings had been replaced almost exactly a year earlier by Peter Smith so this did kind of surprise me) which I had replaced by Wallace Performance, who also sorted my MOT at the start of September. Notably the MOT threw up no other issues or problems whatsoever.

Anyway, I've used the car five or six times since including this past weekend, and when I took it out of the garage on Saturday morning I was absolutely sure that I could hear a similar sound but put it to the back of my mind as she'd been sitting unused for a couple of weeks and therefore I attributed it to dust / rust build up on the discs. Notably I didn't hear the noise again although I didn't cover a great deal of miles Saturday - maybe 35-30 in all, all local city use.

However yesterday (Sunday) after cleaning her up and taking her for a blat it was clear that there WAS a problem, as I could hear a similar noise right from first start up when either reversing or pulling away at low speed and finally last night when reversing back into my garage. It was at this point that I managed to nail the sound to the same wheel (osr) and in fact, with the engine off and me rocking the car very slightly back and forth there clearly IS an issue. All I can say is that it's a fairly high pitched squeaking noise which hits a point and then as the wheel turns further it fades and dies. If you rock back and forth the noise becomes constant, but it's only over a very small area of movement, I'm talking a few centimetres each way here at the very most.

Cue Wallace for an investigation this Thursday morning - I'll let you all know the outcome in due course.

Not sure, not had the car jacked up since i discovered this noise.

Might be able to drive up the garage ramp at an angle and drive the rear left onto some wooden planks to make the back right airborne?!

Then just try and wobble the wheel for play, right?

Sounds exactly the same Shuan! Maybe the high pitched squeak i heard when doing 70mph is related then, basically the same noise but more constant as doing loads of revolutions rather than just rolling forward at 0mph!

I could swear with head in by driveshaft area when rolling car forward it comes from the bearing looking part that must be where the driveshaft meets rear diff. But that's 5 mins of guess work by me + my Dad yesterday.

It does indeed Lawrence.

I had two of my workmates push me around the yard at work with my engine off when this first happened and we all agreed that the noise was rear o/s.....but as I said I was convinced it couldn't have been bearings as they'd BOTH been done just 12 months earlier. The time that happened (September 2011) it was my nsr, and for weeks and weeks beforehand I'd been hearing this creaking every time I went around a right hand bend, particularly roundabouts, at lower speed - giving rise to the theory that the noise still exists when you're travelling at speed, but you just can't hear it as it's hitting that 'spot' all too quickly. Like you, I also like my ICE and tend to have my tunes blasting, another reason I didn't pick up before. I was occasionally left questioning my hearing / sanity too, but there you go, I'm not getting any younger I suppose!

Anyway by the time I got the car from Aberdeen to Hatton near Derby last September (and I had my son in the passenger seat) the noise was pretty bad - I was eventually told by Peter Smith when they started work on the car that my nsr wheel was literally ready to fly off! As a result I had both bearings attended to. Now, a year on, I've just had the osr done (6 weeks ago) and the noise is back. Not good.

As I said though I'll let Wallace Performance investigate this Thursday and will let you know what's what. Just want her sorted before the first weekend in November as I was planning a mini hooh over to the west coast before I put her into semi layup for the winter.

I'll be in touch!

does your car have the uprated hub nuts ?

if the hub nuts come loose the wheel bearing can wobble loose in the hub - then the hub is trash

(there is a fix if the metal in the hub has worn away - machine it oversize and fit a steel sleeve)

I would put my mortgage on this being your near side hub nut. As you turn/push the wheel with the rear clam up (on the flat wink )you get a squeak at the same point. Jack the wheel up and feel for any movement, forward and back. If so re torque then pop along to your local Porsche dealer and get yourself two Boxter hub nuts, mark them once tight and check every so often. My Boxter ones worked themselves loose on the near side after about 18 months, re torque, all is well.

Where are the hub nuts versus the wheel nuts? Not got a torque wrench either.

Okey dokey. Will have to be that.
Might try getting the wheel off the deck somehow just to see if there's any play / noises as i can do that myself I think.

Had this on same wheel as yours, drove me mad.
turned out to be calliper was a bit stuck on inside piston so out side was only pushing
on disc causing the dome screw in calliper to rub against disc.
Its a real bad creaking noise even at low speed, check for marks on disc, sticky calliper very easay
to do. best of luck

Interesting question. When on track / road recently, when I haven't braked for a short while, the pedal travel is long and soft. Immediately firms up after that though. On track is weird, same corner at Coombe after long straight each time pedal was soft, corner immediately after that one, pedal nice and firm. Any connection?

Pedal seems to be in the same return place but feel not consistent, particularly obvious on track.

Just had new RBF 600 fluid so can't be that.
