What can be done to improve the gearbox shifter feel in a 3R?
I note that some posts recommend Hoover conversion kits or M400 kits.
What or where are these to be found.

Cheers,

Cheapest first option is to get it adjusted as it may be out. Most work fine.

I've had my 3R gearshift upgraded to the Tuxman/Jetstream developed system.

It's not cheap but worth it once all the teething troubles were found and resolved.

It's a great upgrade albeit an expensive one.

Can't remember the whole price by it was easily £2K.

It involves changing the gear knob shaft, linkage cables and gear selector plus lots of labour time.

large chunk is labour tony.... when daddysumo had his M400 kit installed by kerridges it was more than that!

cost me £620 as thats what the basic M400 kit cost and my labour was free lol

I'm not a great fan of the "stock" M400 change to be honest - until it warms up it can be a right pig, and even then gets "caught out". In some sense a well adjusted 5 speed feels better.

If Jetstream have solved those M400 change problems I'd recommend you look at their one rather than a "stock" M400, but others will have to comment as I've never driven a car with their one in it.

+1

I very nearly went for the m400 upgrade while the car was in bits at Jetstream, and only held off because there was no cost benefit of doing it at the same time as the rebuild.

Now, I'm so glad I didn't - Dave has obviously set it up right because it's a pleasure to use.

My bet is that bad M400 linkages either need adjustment or have worn components. Mine shifts very well. I adjusted it carefully and lubricated all the ball joints. Another important step is to make sure that the shifter bits aren't hitting anything in the tunnel. I used a small piece of metal to hold hoses away from the linkage where it hangs down in the tunnel.

I had the Jetstream Gearlinkage upgrade fitted to my 5 speed and WOW! what a massive difference - feels so precise and accurate, by far one of the best and noticeable upgrades I have carried out.
Yes it's a bit expensive but I was getting the entire interior re-trim with new carpets, new harnesses and even brand new factory leather seats so it made sense to kill 2 birds with 1 stone.
Dave even fitted me a rather sexy M600 gear surround /shroud.

Mine did it from new, hasn't got any worse, and it's never been able to be adjusted or things replaced to stop it despite Warren having a few goes, so I've just learnt to put up with it.

It's not a disaster, but I'm not convinced I change gear any faster in the M400 than what I did in the M12 after Warren had set it up "perfect".

My M400 was difficult to shift, especially R, 5th and 6th. Tried hard, but couln't seem to get it adjusted. Shifter lever was hitting the tunnel. A few modifications to the shifter linkage on top of the tranny solved it. I rarely miss a shift now; my fault when I do.

There's a lot of bits to the upgrade and alot of labour to fit all the bits as well !!!! Including retrimmimg the tunnel ect , the difference is night and day from my old 5 speed but it's taken me 1100 miles to get ysed to it and I still struggle with the first to second change , still well worth the time and money !!!!

Simon,
i found that when i was changing from 1st to 2nd i was pushing the shifter to the left and back which was making it difficult to slot into gear, i had to train myself to pull it straight back and it slotted in a lot easier.
i know you have different linkage and stuff but maybe it could be a similar thing that you need to change on the way you have trained yourself to change gear.

The m400 gearbox linkage has nylon plastic type bushes which stiffens the gear change when tightened.mine has sealed ball race bearing and isnt affected by how tight the linkage is bolted down.maybe that effects the gear change, and gear selection.!!!

I have a Tuxman Racing fully ball raced quick shifter fitted so I'm pretty sure that is ok , I think it's more to do with the box thank the linkage , it's alot better when hot .
