Brake shims - where do I get them?

Despite shaving the leading edges and applying a bit of copper grease, my front brakes still squeal more than a well used DTM race car! (so annoying as these same pads don't make a noise on my Impreza!)

However, I have been reliably informed that SHIMS might sort this problem combined with some ceratec paste.

Not sure what either of these things are but it's the shims I have no idea whehre they come from. Any help anyone on where I can order some?

Have you got anti squeal pads on the back?..they normally come with the pads and you just stick them on.

im having the same problem after having ferodo ds3000's fitted. Very embarrassing!

did they throw the old pads away?, im betting your anti rattle shims are still bonded on the back of them.... they have to be removed and then put on the new pads.

I had same issue after brakes were replaced by garage, wasnt happy as they NEVER squeeled with my original pads.

Jetstream changed my pads so maybe they didn't take those shims across from the old pads.

Apparently they help with brake fade too.

Combined with ceratec paste apparently that should solve the squealing!

Likewise, Jetstream did mine and although the braking is great the squealing is annoying. Can you get the anti squeal shims from SWLC or something?

take the lip off the disc, something about harmonical resonance or something down those lines..

Lip off the disc is expensive.....

Haha..OK, I just couldn't be bothered to type it out earlier!

The pads had a small chamfer on them fitted with some copper slip. I took them off, cleaned the area and put more of a chamfer on the pads and a decent amount of copper slip. I cleaned the discs and re-assembled.


Problem solved so far.

and before someone says.. Yes i did put the copper slip on the piston side of the pad!!

Hmmm. Jetstream took my pads off, rounded off the leading edges and put cooper slip on the back.

On the way home they were actually WORSE. They now squeal at low speeds, obviously touching somewhere as the wheel rotates and at stopping speed the noise is terrifyingly loud!

These shims i have paid £99 for and this Ceratec paste stuff (was only £3!) better do the job for once and for all.

Tux, i shall report after this weekend as to the success. If it doenst work, might consider going back to standard pads!

P.s. Tux, totally unrelated to this thread but you are the expert on noisy fuel pumps. I only had the wiring upgrade at JS at the weekend (no pump change). But my pump is WAY louder now. Is that normal?

Less volt drop, the pump is working harder

only if you have an adjustable regulator and Trev turns up the pressure, this presupposes it was up to pressure before.

Not sure i have an adjustable regulator. Whatever that is.

No mods, even intercooler (i dont like being able to see the pro-alloy one through the back grille!) so will see what magic Trev can work on a standard GTO-3.

I bloody dreamed i was having it mapped last night! Sad or what?

Lawrence, they did the same for me and it cured it briefly but when I took them off I went a little more aggressive on the chamfer. Also covered the back of the pad in copper slip. Only had 1 small squeal this morning but nothing else yet!

according to Roger at JS my pads have a very high metal content so maybe they are particularly difficult to stop squeaking. Although they have never squeaked once in my Impreza!

Ceratec and shims might be the only way....i shall see.
