My M12 had a 6 disc Mini-Disc changer. This is about as much use to me as $£%* all so I've taken it out.

So here's the question, what else could I plug into it? A six CD would be more use, but would prefer some kinda MP3 affair if poss. AFAIK the head unit is the original Sony. I'm not sure how to find out which extras will be compatible with it ?

By the way, if anybody wants the Mini-Disc changer, drop me an e-mail. No use to me so will be dead cheap !!

Probably easiest to just replace the head unit with an mp3 compatible one. You don't really need a changer when you can get several albums on one disk.

If you really want an mp3 changer, I know alpine do one, but not aware of any sony units, so again would require a head swap.

I assmue it's a sony MD changer (what model) - How much? I need a new head unit as my JVC CD/MD player is crap so I might consider getting a sony CD unit and therefore MD changer....

When I next purchase a new head unit I'll go for the new generation that have RAM (memory) that allows for donloading of something like 20+ CDs - this way you don't need the clutter of a CD changer, there are no skips (no moving parts) and track and CD changes are instant!

Is it alpine that are doing an ipod compatible head unit?

I used to have an MP3 enabled CD changer, it's ok but you still need to burn a load of mp3 onto cd's ! Kenwood do a thingy called the music keg too. Its a cartridge with a dock for you pc and a dock in the car. You download a load of music onto the cartridge, and then plug it into the car.

I was hoping not to change the head unit ! I might just stick to the ipod/itrip/tune in the radio method !!

I'll check the number of the MD changer and get back !

Itrip is pants around london etc, as you can't find many vacant freqs. If your sony has aux input that would be a better bet.

Seen the music keg, and there is a non kenwood specific version available too. Personally I really dislike kenwood heads though, they are the embodiment of silver painted plastic flashing light tat.

Go to Halfords for the info, then buy on-line.

Dension DMP3A. 80GB harddrive MP3 player that pretends to be a Sony CD changer. www.dension.com for info.

I've got one in a box in my hallway waiting for me to get a spare evening to install it. I upgraded my headunit to another Sony (CDX-M9900) as it's a straight swap job (2 minutes in fact).

Cheers

Nice one phil.

I think the denison ice>link could be the answer! Lies to the Head unit that an ipod is the changer!

Well found top surfing!

Is the sony communication protocol advanced enough to recover the track titles properly etc? I know the old changers could only handle 10 chars which would suck

There are some issues around the protocol. As it's not published (and Sony change it every so often) you can get the odd funny. I'm going to install the DMP3A remote display anyway so if it's still a bit pants I've got a backup.

I'm guessing that the Ipod will display the correct thing even if the headunit truncates it. I did look at the Ipod route but a) I already had a Creative ZEN xtra 60GB that I'm very happy with and b) 40GB Ipod isn't big enough for me.

The next task will be running some wires around the car. Anyone know how to get into the tunnel?

Has the head unit made a significant difference? I always thought the drive units were the weak link, so maybe some JM Lab Focals were the answer...

I changed the door units to some Infinity jobs at the same time. I can't say if the head unit would drive them ok (I'll give it a go if you like). I wanted AUX in and MP3 CD playing so I had to upgrade anyway. The video in (which I'm putting a camera in the back, pointing back) is a nice bonus.

The setup sounds great now. I've still to build the little sub system to fit behind the drivers seat...just not enough time.
